A couple of days ago there was a meeting with many dropship pilots along with some members of CPM and we were dissecting the dropship in terms of mechanics, skill point allocations, modules, and all that fun stuff involved.
Not sure if it is open to the public but here are the minutes.
Anyway, I brought the topic about not being able to move the turret when in first person. I developed some complex method of changing the control layout but then I realized that it was a lot simpler than that... in terms of concept not programming (only CCP will know how difficult it will be to write the code for this option).
The control is already set up to move the camera (turret too) up and down when in 3rd person as well as moving the dropship left and right (yaw) without rolling in those directions.
But when you switch to first person, everything remains the same except that you can not use the right stick to move the camera up and down. It becomes disabled in 1st person. You can still move left and right (yaw).
So the only difference between 3rd and 1st person camera, is the ability to move the camera (look) up and down.
So I propose to simply enable the camera look when in 1st person. This method keeps the layout consistent and requires no changes to layout. It allows to pilot to control the turret's pitch only and not have to worry about the turrent's yaw because of the dropship's design (turrent can only move up and down and never left or right).
If for some reason is not an option that can be implemented, then I can later introduce my other more complex option which requires remapping of the control and adding a separate mapping setting for 1st person camera. Which I will go deeper into another day.
Feedback is always welcomed. |

I'm on the fence about it. I don't have a problem aiming at ground troops thanks to an apparent passive scanning buff showing enemy chevrons and the slightly changed camera lets me see over the nose a little better. The static camera in first person allows for more reliable and stable aiming when attacking enemy dropships or strafing/chasing tanks. I'd hate to have my aiming move every time I move the right stick a little up or down in the middle of a dogfight.

514th Wing is the name of the channel. We are not a corporation but a group of pilots from different background who come together for the betterment of Dropships. |

Rails are worthless against infantry but they are quite effective vs other vehicles. I have yet to try a damage mod on a incubus (lack of SP), but I expect it to be quick effective.
Fly above a tank and wait for it's hardeners to run out then activate your hardeners/damage amp and swoop in to deal massive damage. Without a damage amp I can't kill a tank before it runs away and rails aren't very effective vs armor tanks. |

I believe that turret will provide greater stability because you will have a wider range to shoot from before you are required to move your dropship into position... with the static camera, you are continually trying to keep the Dropship in position... and because you are constantly on the move, we tend to overshoot when the tank stops in place where we are required to rotate 180 or do some other things...
with camera control we can stop before we are on top of the tank and start firing at an angle. if the the tank decides to back up, we move forward... if the tank heads in our direction, we simply remain in postion and rotate the turret down until it gets behind us and then we rotate 180 and continue firing. |

I absolutely agree with this suggestion. I fly ADSs in first person all the time and have had quite a few comments on how erratic my flying looks, due to the constant forward acceleration when aiming at targets on the ground. |
