When tanks required teamwork, AV said all was good.
Now that AV is more effective with teamwork, AV can't cope and demands nerfs.
Please note that teamwork is NOT required for AV work, it just is a LOT easier with another person.

Right now a base tank with no nitrous is still moving plenty fast enough to dodge most AV and recover. Tanks definitely took a dip in skill to operate, I'm just hoping it sorts itself out. For the time being, I'll be harassing all the reds with my Incubus, because you can't outrun me

My how the tables have turned...
Vehicles are the primary form of AV, with armor piercing rails and salvos of missiles. Infantry AV is just as effective at killing tanks, but they have to be mindful of the tank's mods, just like tanks have to be.
Gone are the days of AV firing lock on swarms from the redline three shotting a tank even with its mods going. Things just got a lot more balanced and the gameplay is a lot more dynamic. Hell, we even have dropships in the air again. And this is with even less module slots than ever. Drivers have had to completely relearn everything about tanks to build new fits and feel out how tank vs. tank combat works out.
Why is it so hard to expect infantry AV will take it upon themselves to also "figure it out" and use some tactics?
I have been killed a couple times in a WTFPWNBBQ style by a guy with non-proto AV while my mods were off and in a congested area. Needles to say I learned from that and I now know what not to do with the updated tanks.
You know what I have seen more than that? Idiots shooting swarms at a shield tank with mods roaring, infantry wiping out their three locus nades on a tank with full shields and armor, and even more people trying to run after my moving tank in the wide open and doing rings around the map without ever figuring out they can hop on me with an LAV in a split second...
Tanks requiring teamwork is the definition of how to play. We cant hack, go inside, or even transport troops now if we dont have small turrets (YAY). We need boots on the ground.
I spend my matches playing strictly AV. There will be no vehicles as long as my team caps.

so what your saying is because a tank cant go in a building they are using team work... what a load of bull.
i will tell you whats team work. driving your crew upto that building and covering them. then when they get back in you protect that area with your life. but what actually happens is tank driver doesn't let crew in his tank. instead he speeds about not protecting his team but shooting at anything that moves not because its supporting his team but because he just wants lots of kills. he clears around objectives where there are no friendly to cap it screaming at the tv about how blueberries are not capping objectives after he has cleared them. he retreats at the first sign of av (or did before 1.7) leaving all his team to fend for themselves.
i would say about 99% of tank drivers i have met are not team players. they are just there for the kills. the few good ones are those who fill up with crew and support the advance and not cower shooting in from the outside looking for easy kills.
team work is actually contributing to the team effort not sitting about expecting others to do all the work while you just roam about solo. can you honestly say that those ten tanks on the field driving about shooting each other are contributing to the team. if we didn't have tanks objectives would still be capped. if we didn't have guys on the ground working as a team then there would be no one to cap objectives and i know that most tankers would never consider leaving their tanks to do so.
now to answer the question... no i don't think they should not self repair as i know for a fact most tankers wont wait for anyone to repair them or wouldn't spec into something to repair someone else. the fact that they asked for their small turrets to be removed is testament to the fact they don't want to work as a team
