All depends on what kind of role you want to play.
Pretty much anything under the core upgrades tree is good, and you want to specialize in at least one weapon.
You can stick to basic/militia suits for a while until you figure out what playstyle you want, then skill into one type of dropsuit. If you like equipment go logi. If you like killing go assault. If you like being sneaky/stealthy go scout. If you like defending an area or blowing up tanks go heavy.
Here's a video on logi skills and what I find important. It should help a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vAlei1E4Oc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The rest of the videos on my channel so some fun gameplay and fitting ideas so that you can see what stuff is awaiting you in the future if you decide to keep playing. _____________________________________
Also, I agree that the time it takes to get used to fittings/skills/etc is rather annoying. I stopped playing this game for 3 months after I first started, then when I came back I had over 2.5 million sp to spend and started actually having fun.
If anything, find a corp, join a chat channel, and play with some good players so that you actually have a chance on the battlefield. Otherwise you'll just get stomped all day long.

Do yourself a favor and stick to med suits and anything with rifle in the name (except laser rifle) and you will be just fine. DO NOT under any circumstance branch out until they fix the other 80% of the game.

Go for Medium Fittings as they're the most versatile and thus the "safest" for players. If you're there for support, go Logistics, if you're there to kill go for Assault. Pick one of the two and stick with it. You'll need about 5 months to really get deep into the role(Proto Suits, Proto Weapons, Complex Modules, Proto Grenades, etc). Keep a game plan and work towards it.
- Try to get a Prototype Suit first
- A Prototype weapon is also important
- Don't neglect Handheld Weapon Operation(or whatever the skill is called that gives you passive bonus damage for all weapons)
- Work on your preferred choice of HP(Armor or Shields)
- Grenades aren't a must have but are cool to have(pro-tip Flux grenades clear out enemy equipment much better)
- Take note of what everybody else is using
As far as races go:
Caldari dropsuits are meant for keeping distance OR hit-and-runs. The upcoming Caldari Rail Rifle allows you to take down Gallente armor tankers from a distance or run up on them with SMGs and strafe around their bullets until their down. Both should be viable methods. Caldari are the faster of the races, being right under Minmatar
Gallente dropsuits are meant for closer combat than the Caldari with the Gallente Assault Rifles actually sucking at long range hits. You don't want to be stuck in a corridor with a Gallente who has stacked damage mods and about 700+ eHP(Shields+Armor).
Amarr are meant to be the real Armor Tankers, able to sit and take hits while they kill you down with their Amarr Scrambler Rifles(they can take out 1000+ eHP with two hits at their highest caliber, I've heard). Amarr have the habit of coming off as thuggish or pushy just because of their Armor stacking capabilities. They're slower than the other suits but that definitely does not handicap them.
Minmatar are meant to speed tank around with versatility, but currently the Minmatar are really UP compared to other suits, although you can still be a slayer with it, you'll have to go to unorthodox methods of slaying to get the job done. More than likely if CCP doesn't adjust these dropsuits soon, players will probably find a work around to using them properly despite their drawbacks because Minmatar are the most crafty
^ I forgot to mention the Minmatar's Combat Rifle but really I don't know how they will work with Minmatar's yet.
-
On a side note, I'd advise you to join a corp or popular chat channel other than local so that you may get the experience from playing with many different kinds of players. There's less incentive to play solo than there is to play as a team.

I've finally just gotten my KD/R to 1.07(I die more than I need to >.>) and I'm a pretty above average merc that has the experience of losing thousands of times to double those loses into wins.
Wrong
New players should always focus on core skills
A STD Suit with STD weapon and STD grenades with max electronics and engineering, max handheld weapon upgrades and max shield and Armor skills is stronger and cheaper than an ADV suit with ADV weapons and modules and advanced electronics/engineering/shield and armor skills
My STD suit
Caldari C-1 Assault
Assault Rifle Submachine Gun m1 Locus Grenade
Complex Shield Extender Complex Light Damage Modifier
Enhanced Armour Plates Basic Armor Plates
Compact Nanohive
197/197 CPU 36/39 PG
342 Shields 364 Armor 706 eHP
ISK 20,460 AR Damage = 43.01 (up from 34 base damage)
When you take into account a GEK alone costs 17k it really isn't good advice to tell someone to get a proto suit 1st .. a proto suit without high lvl core skills is just an expensive ISK sink and really isn't worth it
My loadout above is ridiculously cost effective
So OP Focus on your core skills 1st before going proto

That should keep you busy for 3 or 4 solid months and about 10,000,000 SP After that, you'll know what you want to specialize in and everything will fit. And, if you can relegate yourself to just [STARTER FIT]s, you'll have 100,000,000 ISK or more.

Whether you lose the kid or not, you'll be in better shape than if you played Dust.
Strange thing is, no one is keeping me here........

If you are going to play then make sure you read everything, read what every item, suit, gun, skill, equipment, mods and vehicles do, read everything.
Join a corp, I'd recommend dust university, they will train you.
Specialise your character, don't be a jack of all trades and master of none.
Consider how you want to play and what suits, items and guns etc compliment that.
Teamwork is essential in dust and no there's none of that trash noobcake quickscoping either.
Make sure you tweak your sensitivity as well.
Ps. Those letters need to be hacked and can be hacked back.

Can have 16 5-10mil Sp players working together, 2-4 slayer vet's will ruin any team work. There is no x factor in killing them or having to keep concentration up for 15 minutes straight with my aiming.. I can relax and move crosshair's in general areas(AA locks) move cross hair up slightly half a second and the target is dead barely using 25% of my clip. Rinse, Repeat..

Don't stand still - ever.
Run militia or standard suits(i prefer standard, they're cheap cheap and give you a buff over militia. Also, take a close look at the cost of the specialized suits(Assault, Logistics, Scout) to the generic suits(Medium Frame, Light Frame) - best bang for the buck imo is the Standard Assault or Standard Logi because you get the role bonus and the suits are cheap)
Remember that the core skills will apply to every suit you wear.
Tank your suit but be aware that your tank will never save you: everything comes down to battlefield awareness and tactics.
Even militia/standard weapons can and do kill high-level protoype suits - it's all about choosing your engagements and leveraging terrain.
You can run solo but it is hard mode for masochists. Corp recommended while you're learning the game.
Get a scanner and train up your profile dampening if you want to be something other than prey. If you're running a scanner squad up(a good idea regardless).
To make decent warpoints while you're learning the ropes, put a level into uplinks and a level into nanohives/nanite injectors. Spawn in with your uplink suit(fastest suit, prolly worth getting a level in Light frames) sprint in and drop an uplink somewhere secure, switch out to your nanohive suit and get a hive or two down, and then run an injector or a scanner for your main combat suit.
You'll be squishy at the beginning - don't go rambo, find the fights, stay behind your guys and pick them up with your needle or scan for them and keep your eyes open for enemy flankers.
A merc's early career in New Eden can be rough. Take your beatings like a man and stick with it - you'll be dishing out the pain yourself eventually, but it will take a while to get there.
And as far as investing in the game goes, what we're playing right now isn't really DUST - CCP is still adding the basic FPS gear and features to the game and fixing up old code. In the new year we'll start to see some of the real DUST content and things will really start to rock.
I support SP rollover.

Depends on what OP wants. Some people feel they're better if they get Proto sooner than later and imo it's all about the mentality. If OP is the type of person, he could run your idea through but end up feeling late to the game because he doesn't have a Proto and is getting "Proto stomp," thus wanting the option to Proto. Either way, a person will want BOTH set of skills at the end of the day.
