Wait a week after the 1.7 hits before spending any SP.
It will be painful and the temptation will be strong, but wait and watch. Take a step back and keep a cool head, let yourself get pubstomped, try out some of the FW matches, watch how grenades and MDs work after the explosive fixes, observe how people are adapting to the changes to shield tanking.
After playing DUST for a full year now, I like to pretend that I start to see patterns emerge about the game and community, at the very edges of my consciousness, like those moments where you lie down on your bed and a beam of light from the rising sub pierces through your curtains, and illuminates countless motes of dust. You lie there, and you imagine you see the grand scheme of the individual specks, where there is actually nothing but chaos.
I am proposing to you, new players, and for you teachers out there to spread the message, that it is unwise to both attempt to find the grand pattern OR let yourself be swept away by the excitement of the new build.
There is one (1) exception. If you are spending points on something you truly enjoy. If that is the case, go for it.
If you are unsure of what path you want to take, of what road leads to the destination you want to arrive at, hold off for a while and observe. You can learn so much from that guy who killed you with the new Combat Rifle, but failed to account for its weakness in close quarters and took a mouthful of shotgun pellets. You can learn so much when you watch people accidently kill each other in Faction Warfare because they got accustomed to insta-win grenade tosses without accounting for friendly fire.
Tl;dr? Well then maybe this message isn't for you.
If in any doubt after watching and learning from the mistakes of others after a week, join the channel "Learning Coalition" (without the " " marks) and I am sure there will be people there willing to assist you with choosing the right or safe path. Oh, and DUST Uni is there to help too.

The problem is lack of Militia gear so we could throw ISK away and not SP
I too have played for a year + since CB and I know for sure that the problem you outline Vyzion, is unavoidable. People have no self restraint for the most part. They would rather waste and complain than be wise. |

Very good point, I know I'll be sinking SP back into Dropships (what can I say, flying is my weakness), but I'll try to take care about recommending skills unless I know the patch effect on them. Good looking out.
Not new, just new to you.

If anything I'll probably try level 1 in each of the new rifles, I want to give them a spin, I already use scrambler rifles mainly but I would prefer to see how the new ones perform. |

Words of wisdom indeed.
Though I can tell ya'll right about now that my advice is going to probably be stick to leveling core skills. Those passive boosts apply to any suit and makes them all better.
And try the Plasma Cannon, I may suck at it, but that is a barrel of giggles on steroids. |

This is very solid advice.
That said, I'm going to completely ignore it and specialize in the railrifle on the first day. I'm a sucker for racial playstyles and I need that third racial weapon to go along with my three racial suits. |

Good advice that I'm going to ignore as well. I'm finally getting my racial rifle and I'll be dropping 1.4 mil on it. I'll put the 12K into rail rifles too so I know how they work. I'll wait a bit to decide on what to do with my vehicle points though.

I agree, I'll probably go straight into the Combat Rifle Operation III as well, but mainly for the vehicle users who are deciding to drop vehicles entirely to go into infantry, waiting might be wise. I personally don't know how anything will turn out though.
