Hey CCP, I've been cruising the threads and I can't find any real info that isn't just whispers or conjecture.
Could we have an official explanation of Profile Precision, Profile Dampening and Scan Radius. Could you also elaborate on how these numbers interact with each other and are represented in our HUD and the mini map.
I believe I get the basics (like many other mercs here) that the lower the profile the harder to detect and the better the radius the farther you can see someone, but I would like to hear from you how the mechanics are actually set up. In addition to this I would like to better understand the passive detection system and its relation to the mini map. The mini maxes out at 100m, has a measured ring at 50m and I believe 20m....but how is this useful if the lvl 5 scan radius for a scout suit tops at 24m and I can barely see that first ring on the map.
Thank you for the read |

I can tell you how it Works IT DONT WORK.
Somtimes a heavy will be able to sneak up behind you and kill you wiht nova knives, and sometimes a scout is seen LOOONG before he gets close.
Well thats how it works for me. |

There's no mystery about how it's supposed to work: If the enemy is closer than your scan range and his scan profile is larger than your scan precision, he appears on your minimap and you see the red chevron above is location in the first person view.
However, I've once in a while noticed the system not working correctly. A few weeks ago, while in a assault suit without a squad, I saw a red chevron through a wall. I pulled out the scrambler pistol, walked around the corner and killed a PRO gallente scout in two headshots before he could even react. I don't think an assault suit is supposed to detect scout suits with at least 25% profile reduction (Gallente Scout lvl 5) through walls. It was likely a Line-Of-Sight check failure (man, those are hard to program, linear algebra, dude! ). |

I get the precision over profile bit, but when it comes to the passive scan range it realistically only benefits what you can see in your field of vision and not the mini map. |
