Am new to this game(22ish days, think my eyes are just starting to open) and have a few questions:
1)Why when I'm hacking a gun turret not far from our own MCC does a blue tank turn up and start popping missiles into said turret, they must clearly see me hacking
2) Can I do damage to my own team mates( i.e. said tank driver)
3) why can I hack some installations and not others (I assume a red installation needs hacking, blue have been done),however some reds I can't hack?
4)I currently use a militia heavy suit, survivability in any other suit is very poor at the moment.Another week and I should have enough SP to get an adv caldari assault suit. Am I missing something or is that the idea(i.e. noobs are put in as cannon fodder for the vets).
Thanks in advance |

1.) most tankers will get rid of any turrets they see so the turret doesn't shoot them in the future if they happen to fall into the opposing teams hands, plus 100 wp when destroyed is better then 50wp hacked.
2.) You will only do damage to teammates in planetary conquest(pc), faction warfare and public contracts friendly fire is off.
3.) If the turret is currently in use by someone then it may not be hacked.
4.) don't go for any suits higher then STD if you dont have your electronics and engineering skills to atleast 3 and have your shield extenders or handheld weapon upgrades to 5. a ADV suit with all basic modules is no better then a STD suit.

Thanks guys for the quick replies guys
All makes sense re tank driver, thanks.
With regards to question 3 I was meaning those little screens A,B,C etc ,not the turrets
Have looked into the learning coalition but thought it would be worthless without a mic (on my xmas list) or is everyone welcome
Thanks again |

Everyone is welcome in LC chat. As to the objectives you couldn't hack, it's possible that even though they showed red, they may have been hacked already. If this is the case, when you look at them you will see them slowly filling from bottom to top almost like a progress bar.

Thanks Lanius. Is there any way of asking questions in game without a mic?
Edit : have armor to level 3 and shields at 2 at the mo,just didn't seem to make much difference on a standard assault suit, hence I started using a militia heavy for the added HP.Thanks mate and hope to see you in the LC soon |

You can open your chat at any point (even in-game) by pressing 'select'. The problem is, you can't see when you get a response without having it open, meaning you're essentially helpless while reading. What I would recommend if you have questions in-game, only check chat when you die, you have some time to read before you have to spawn in.
Also, I'm curious, how comfortable are you in the Heavy suit? Have you considered it might be the right one for you?

I've seen rookies run up to terminals right after I've hacked it. The objective will still show a red border but start filling with blue. Either move on to the next objective or find some cover and ambush any reds that come to stop the hack.
Survivability depends more on cover and tactics than on a thick tank. I kill heavies all the time while in my scout suit. Find the enemy before they find you, set up your attack and duck behind cover as soon as you can. Make them cross open space to get to you. Don't break cover when people are using scrambler rifles because they'll kill you before you take 3 steps.
Another problem with heavy suits is their passive scanner is garbage. Assaults are a bit better but will not see logistics or scouts which is why they all use active scanners now.

Not very comfortable at all, I tend to start with the free "black eagle" scout suit, get a few hacks in if I make the start of a battle then switch to a Heavy.I use the GEK AR/militia SMG so I'm not even getting the most out of the suit but it gives me the security. I've had a few positive KDR's (although none with any other suit) but it is very slow. I try and follow other blues and stick with them but this can be hard due to speed/stamina. Also it depends who is on my team(If I get in a battle and I'm on team Caldari state I seem to really struggle for some reason?the team always gets battered).
I tend to hack a terminal then guard it as long as teammates are present,if no teammates about I then look for them as stealthily as possible, difficult sometimes when in a milk float |

Thanks Reav and Sky. Good info to take on board.
Not had much confrontation with scouts as I tend to stick to other blues but I'll keep a lookout for the lone wolves. |

If you're experimenting with militia gear you're on the right track. You mentioned getting to Adv Cal Assault, I'm just curious what made you pick that, and why aren't you using the Cal Mlt suit to get used to the play style?
One of the most common mistakes for rookie SP investment is leveling up your suit before your modules. You can run Adv modules on a Std frame and get more benefit than an Adv frame with Std modules, less ISK too. If you're set on Caldari, get those shield extenders and rechargers to Adv before your suit, you'll have to figure out for yourself if you want to go with regulators or plates in your lows.

All solid advice. I have over 24 million sp invested into assault. Have proto minmatar and caldari racial suits. Core skills are extremely important as you want to be able to fit mods on your new suits.
One skill that they did fail to mention is shield regulation, even a basic shield regulator can do a lot for you as it lessons the amount of time it takes for your shield to begin recharging, which in turn gives your recharger a chance to start working a little earlier. Down the road hook a complex regulator with a complex recharger or energizer, good times...

Cyrax, since you seem to have a good perspective on the Cal assault, which module do you feel andoori should get to Adv next (since he's already at lvl 2 on extenders). Personally I'd go with rechargers/energizers so he could keep a plate in the low for now, though admittedly I run Std Cal logi and have most my SP in Dropships.

My race was the reason for the choice of suit,so many choices to make when you first join the game and I sunk points into suits instead of slots.I thought I could only use Caldari suits when I started(why else would there be races I thought) and when I realised my mistake it was too late,SP spent.
Have used the Caldari militia suit with little success,I put it down to lack of slots and low PG/CPU.I assumed (probably wrongly) that more slots would enable me more protection.I now know it does but is so small compared to armor/shield upgrades. I wish I'd seen this site before starting up. |

Thanks Cyrax I have shield upgrades at 3 shield extension at 2 shield recharging at 1 shield regulation at 0
Would you recommend pulling them all up together or concentrating on one at a time? |

You'll get better short term gains by doing one at a time, without hindering your long term progression. What do I mean by that? If you level up extensions, you get better survivability, making your SP grind easier (and usually more fun). It's a truism that you should level up the skills associated with particular items or equipment one tier at a time. The exception being certain weapons that require the intermediate levels to unlock, such as breach or assault variants.
However, core skills that modify stats with each level can be unlocked one level at a time and still be useful, such as your shield core skill that gives you an additional 5% per level.
Personally I look for max benefit vs SP investment, i.e. you get more HP for level 3 in armor plates than you do for the same level of armor core skill on most suits. That being said, the 3 levels of armor core skill are a better SP investment than the last 2 levels of plates. This is just the example I've number crunched, I'm not sure how it balances out with shields.

Regardless of how you picked Caldari, their suits are good. Those skill points will not be wasted in the long run, unless you decide you like armor tanking better than shield tanking.
