This is a blanket request in lieu of my discussion on Balancing Breaking DUST
I appreciate all of the number tweaking the DEV team does, and listening to what is discussed on the forum, for the continued betterment of DUST. I fear tho that the emphasis on balancing issues with game mechanics and stats for items is being done in the spreadsheets and not with "engineering" in mind. I would rather see equipment being brought out to counter equipment problems. For example:
The swarm was once called OP and was criticized for its dumbfire capability. Damage gets reduced, lock on becomes mandatory and projectile velocity along with range get nerfed.
What if instead the design was modeled after a contemporary portable surface to air weapon. The item can be carried and fired by an individual allowing it to be deployed anywhere, but its weight makes it cumbersome and its resource requirement is high drastically limiting the use of a sidearm or other mods. The user would have to be covered by another soldier or would be vulnerable while they acquired lock. If they missed the single round clip would take considerable time to reload. The payoff is that a direct hit would certainly kill all but the most hardened tank or armored ship.
In defense the vehicle would be given a warning tone that they were being locked, and missile info on their radar and HUD. Active modules for jammers, chaff or flare like countermeasures would have to be used to break this lock in addition to maneuvering. Speed alone cannot outrun the missiles. Partial hits could be survived, but a direct hit should be fatal unless the vehicle was outfitted with considerable passive defenses.
Any good manufacturer is looking to get a leg up in their market. You build a device to fill a niche roll and it succeeds unless it is countered by another niche device. This is why new weapons get developed and improved upon. Ours should be no different.
High slot jammers against active scanners, anti swarm flak variants of flaylock pistols.... don't always fall back on changing just the numbers to fix problems |
