Reading through Skype discussions and the forums as well as twitter, a picture of improvement in the game can be seen. Once you get past all the QQ'ing that people get hung up with little stuff.
I know that there has been a ton of optimisation work, memory leak fixes, reduction in the game footprint, networking, UI optimisation... I could go on.
Thing is, you only find out all this if you go digging and getting nuggets of info from the Dev's.
New content is king in terms of perception of progress in the game but all the background stuff is much more important in my opinion.
All the CPM in here, could you push for a series of Dev blogs detailing all this stuff that has been done. The bugs that have been squashed, programming roadblocks removed. The best example is the corp member list. How did they reduce the load time for a 1000+ member list from 3mins to 3 secs??!
If this sort of background magic is explained and how it impacts on the progression of content being added, then a LOT of the QQ'ing would be reduced.
The blogs would be dry and heavy going to read and only maybe of interest in the real tech nerds (me) but once the info is out there it can help people understand much better the process behind the game.

I'd like to hear these stories too because this is my specialty as a dev. We'll probably never hear the details though because they usually start with, "well, we hired this dumbass and ..." Companies don't like like air dirty laundry like this.

We are nerds and we demand charts with esoteric data and graphs!
Oh great benevolent god of stats and graphs please grant our wishes and supply us with many math based figures and the holy text we so desperately need. I will scrifice a viper to BOB later to hopefully expedite our prayers.

This is a pretty cool suggestion. I'll see what we can do. The main obstacle I see is that it would require a lot of input from numerous teams. Having focused Dev Blogs allows us to schedule them in when the Devs have time, and something like this would potentially require several teams to be involved. :)

We had a chat with Dennie on skype about this.
I would strongly advise CCP /not/ to focus on the past when doing anything related to technical 'progress', mostly because it will dig up unnecessary skeletons and draw attention to the fact that almost every system in dust has been re-worked (sometimes completely re-written) anywhere between two and five (or more) times as a result of being flawed or un-ideal in ways that were almost always easily avoidable if they had bothered to communicate with their community at all.
While "tech p0rn" blogs as they are sometimes called are really awesome and create some cool insights to how things work... These should all be based on present/future projects. |

Not trying to downsize anyone, just trying to point out the humor here =D
The main obstacle about coming up with a dev blog about overcoming roadblocks is getting a lot of input from numerous teams which are experts at overcoming obstacles.

Great idea. Be careful though, tech **** is for a niche audience so may not be to everyone's taste. As a techie, I'm curious as to what their network stack is, what they're coding in and what machines they run on, and also what they have running on the back end, but although this delights my inner geek, it can turn off non-technical people almost instantly as it's incomprehensible. |
