I have no idea how damage stacks in this game, so I figure an EvE player would know better than me. My question has a little story attached to it, so bear with me.
I was in a game with my Charybdis just a few moments ago, and I seem to have pissed off one of the players. He had a prototype swarm launcher that he kept firing at me whenever he saw me. He was the only AV person I met the entire game. Whenever he hit me, he took my 2100 shields down to 800, from a single volley of swarms. My passive resistance is at 49.07%, and explosives do 80% damage to shields, so how much ridiculous damage must he have been doing to take a 1300 hit out of my shields with a weapon that does 1980 damage before modifiers?
I figure using civilian math that it would multiply, so 1980*0.4907*0.8, but that would equal 777 damage, a far cry from what he hit me with. Even if he had prof 5 and 3 damage mods, that would be 1980+(1980*.15)+(1980*.1)+(1980*.1*.87)+(1980*.1*.57) So 1980+297+198+172+112=2759, then using my resistances, 2759*.4907*.8=1083, still not enough.
Am I not stacking damage correctly? Am I not stacking resistances correctly? Both? I've just never understood the math of this game.

Never mind. I just ran the numbers. What ever you're doing to calculate for damage mods and prof must be wrong. Here are the correct numbers for prof 5 and three damage mods:
2,877.8051 HP
49.01% = 1,410.41228

Hum? Looks like I am wrong. Forgot to calculate the inharent shield resistance at 20%
With prof five and 4 dm's it only comes up to: 1,161.682
Hum very interesting. Perhaps there is some kind of bug with the damage calculation for explosives. I do remember hearing about such a bug vs. armor where the damage was coming out to be more like 1.35 instead of 1.20 let me see if I can reverse engineer these numbers an come up with a percentage.

Are you sure that these numbers are accurate?
From 2100 to 800
These numbers seem a little round to me.

From 2100 to 800 and some change. so like 821 or 837 or something in that area, hard to be sure with shield regeneration always active. I just rounded for easy math application.

Sorry got distracted. I'm back now though.
At 837 there is a damage discrepancy of 1.159 damage excess. This lines up nearly perfectly with the damage discrepancy found between explosives and armor at 1.35 instead of 1.20. It seems that the game may indeed be calculating explosives damage inaccurately. More testing is need.

If I might, there's also the problem that explosive damage is probably more than what it written down. If you're hit directly in most games, it isn't like the splash misses you. It may be that the more of your body is inside the splash zone the more gets hurt, like TF2 does it. Of course, with Swarms going for Center of Mass and a Charybdis being pretty big, that could add up pretty fast.

I'm actually quite amazed that more people are not interested in this (just me?). It is quite possible that explosives damage could be doing 15% more damage than they are supposed to, across the board. This doesn't look good for the coming "vehicle balance" and would definitely explain why grenades are so OP.
Somebody with the ability to record needs to get out there and get some footage, (since CCP only seems to care when there is video footage).
If you are interested in doing this, but are not good at math or do not know how to set up a test. Post in this thread that you are willing and I will tell you what you need to do and I will run all the numbers once you have captured to required footage.
This is quite an important thing. I hope that someone is paying attention.

Damage does not work like that, at least not that I am aware of. Any falloff damage should occur from the max listed damage (the stat) of the particular weapon.
