After quite a few games against the less fortunate newbies, i've decided to create a guide specificlly to help any new comers to dust 514. well here goes.
Just Starting Out
DO NOT SPEND ANY OF YOUR SKILL POINTS. This is very important, do not spend any of your skillpoints until you are absolutely sure you want the specific skill your spending it on. I Spent roughly 1.7m of my skill points into nova knives and let me tell you, that was a huge mistake.
Buy atleast one of all the milita items.(You don't have to get the milita vehicles)
this is key to testing out the various weapons and dropsuits/dropsuit modules avalible in dust, althought let it be noted that not all items have a milita varient avalable and you must spend precious SP(skillpoints) to use even the standard version.
Play basic public matches until you have roughly 750 thousand to 1 million total SP points, by this time you should have a rough understanding on how the game mechanics work and what weapons/playstyles best suit your character. You Should also have roughly 7-8 million ISK(ingame currency)
SkillPoints
-Depending on the roll you picked, if you enjoy killing your enemys i would suggest getting your Handheld weapon upgrades to level 5 and all of your dropsuit upgrades to level 2(Armour-Core-Shield).
your weapon of choice should say at level 1 until you have reasonable shielding/armour. -If you decide on more of a supportive roll then i would suggest getting your dropsuit of choice to level 3 and getting the logistics suit so you will have more CPU/PG to enable you to have more equipment slots. The second important thing for you to get is your electronic and engineering skills to level 2(These are located in your dropsuit upgrades under Core upgrades) these will give all of your dropsuits even more CPU/PG to equip better equipment and modules.
The most important thing to decide is weather you want to use shields or armour.
- Shields are very strong Vs. grenades/explosives and slightly stronger then armour vs projectile weapons, but weak Vs. lasers and scrambler weapons. There is also no running penalty, and shields passively regenerate over time. - Armour is very strong Vs. lasers and scrambler weapons, but very weak Vs. grenades/explosives and slighty weaker vs projectile weapons. There is a running penalty when wearing armour modules and armour does not regenerate passively. the only suit that regenerates armour passively without any repairing modules is all mimmatar suits.
NOTE- it is much more important for you to get your shield extenders to level 5 right away then it is for you to get your armour plating to level 5. Level 1 shield extenders give a small 22 bonus to shielding, while level 5 gives 66 extra points to shielding.(3 times as much) While armour only gives 85 armour at level 1 and 135 armour at level 5(50 extra armour) while lowering your running penalty even further.
Corporations
Getting into a corporation early when just starting out in dust is useful.
It alows you to get into squads easier and winning matches in a squad is alot more likely then when alone. It also alows you to find veteran players that are willing to help you out on a specific thing that is troubling you.
once you get experianced enough you will beable to join PC(planetary conquest) matches and get paid handsomely while doing so, but be advised. i suggest you have atleast advanced gear with proto modules or be in full proto gear to atempt this.
IMPORTANT - If you are the type that likes to go lonewolf, don't be discouraged. you can do that but you wont get much praise from other players in a squad and if your the type that likes to steal vehicles or nanite inject(revive a dead teammate) players in the middle of a firefight, i can guarentee you that everyone will have a seering hate for you in they're hearts. so don't be shocked if you join a match and find yourself being targeted by a specfic person or squad because you destroyed they're 1m tank or revived them 3 times in a row midbattle. If you can be a team player while not squaded up go for it, but if not please squad up or GTFO

Combat
Here are some tips while in battle
DO NOT BE RAMBO, this is not call of duty. you cant sprint towards any enemy with common sense and just melee them to death.
DO NOT CROUCH, I see many new players doing this and it is a death wish in dust to crouch. the only time you should need to crouch is if you are sniping.
Get into the habit of switching to your sidearm once your primary weapon clip is nearly empty, if you reload during a firefight those 4 seconds you wasted could mean life or death.
Get used to running away from a fight. alot of fights are unfair and in the enemies favor, when this happens do not be afraid to find your escape route and possibly flank them. If it is just you, 1 vs 4, then i suggest finding cover and tossing a few grenades and making a run in the opposite direction. No matter what gear you are using, if it is just you vs a group of people you will be taken down.
RUN WITH A SQUAD. as mentioned before squads win matches and it is very rarely that one team mate will decide the fate of a match. If your using mics, your squad mates are able to relay what they see and inform you and your team if a tank is pulling up to the city so you will have time to pull out AV to get rid of it quick.
Equipment
The equipment you should carry is different depending on your role in the match.
Assault- i recommend that an assault class would carry either, an active scanner or nanohives.
-active scanner's are good to catch any enemies trying to flank you or to find that pesky scout sneaking around with his shotgun. -nanohives are good for keeping your gun reloaded or keeping your armour at the maximum.
Scout- For scouts i recommend soley the active scanner, and in some cases the droplink or remote explosives.
-Active scanner is the scouts most usefull tool he could have, the abillity to know where your enemy at all times is unvaluable no matter who you are and being the sneaky scout just makes it even better.(when scanning remember to spin in a 360 to get everyone in all directions) -Remote explosive's are the scouts anti-infantry bread and budder, put them at freshly hacked objectives to stop any would be hackers or set up traps of your own by put one around a corner and peppering a group of enemies.(to trigger your explosive, hit L1 as if you were aiming and it will have a .5 second delay before blowing up.)
Logistics- The logibro can use any piece of equipment effectively
-Repair tools are used inbetween fights when one of your squad mates to waiting for his armour to regenerate, rep him and get him back into the match.
-Nanite injections are very valuble in an ambush match or if you are lose to being cloned. NEVER INJECTED A TEAMMATE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIREFIGHT, wait until it cools down and while your injecting him use yourself as a human shield from any snipers looking for an easy kill.
-Droplinks are for when your team gets redlined and you need to get back into the match or if you just want your own pocket full of teamamtes ready to pop up whenever you need them.(do not put these in large open areas or in any choke points with only one way in or out.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick clarification, Minmatar light frames have no passive armor reps, but all races logistics suits do. Nice guide, hope more newbros get on the forums to actually see it.

I was like 95% sure that minmatar scouts got the passive repairs... I think i'll have to check again, thanks though.
