Well the last "What if?" thread was extremely insightful, so here's another one:

What if heavy suits & weapons were rebalanced such that they were extremely powerful, but could not fire without first stopping & going through a ~1 second deploy animation (e.g. replacing normal crouch behaviour)?

Bonus question: What if a deployed heavy's camera was locked in place (but the reticule unlocked), such that heavy could aim freely at anything within his field of vision, but could not turn his camera without first undeploying.

The idea here is that heavies would primarily be used for locking down chokepoints, but would be extremely vulnerable to flanking.

How about we make heavies deployable turrets?

Heavies are already slow, the HMG overheats and heavy weapons have the slowest reload in the game. Those three things are already a balancing factor to warrant powerful weapons.

Reminds me of the Devastators form Space Marine (Warhammer 40k)

Weapon rate of fire reduced while mobile. Once placed and set up the RoF increases dramatically

We could also do a range increase too considering the HMG's poor range

How about the HMG's spread gets fixed so that it isn't as accurate as a laser rifle after spooling up?

Rasatsu wrote:That would help but the HMG still is pretty poor at its job. CCP says it's a suppression weapon. The community says its a point defense weapon. But it fails so miserably at both of these, and fixing the dispersion to not be laser accurate will only lower its DPS when it is directly on a target. And I've firsthand lost in a 1v1 fight with my Proto HMG directly on a CalLogi with an AR because the HMG DPS is that bad.How about the HMG's spread gets fixed so that it isn't as accurate as a laser rifle after spooling up?
I understand that the HMG (and other Heavy weapons) would be completely unbalanced if, with their current mechanics, their DPS was increased to 1000. But with a brace mechanic like the OP is talking about it could be possible.

I always imagined a charge mechanic where you could charge up, hold it, then fire when you want. So a Heavy could have an HMG charged and ready to unleash hell on someone the second they poke their head out. Maybe on a Heavy X (jump) is replaced with Spool / Charge so you could hold it..? A heavy jumping is laughable already.

 Assault HMG
 1.5 second charge until firing
 Can't hold charge
 40 damage per bullet
 900 RPM

600 DPS after 1.5 second charge, can't hold charge

 Regular HMG
 3 second charge until firing
 60 damage per bullet
 900 RPM

 900 DPS after a 3 second charge

 BreachHMG
 5 second charge until firing
 Immobilized while spooling / firing
 80 damage per bullet

1200 DPS after a 5 second charge and immobilized

Nailed it, that was exactly what I had in mind when I posted this.

That game had one of the best implementations of heavy infantry weaponry I've come across in a long time. They did not overshadow tac marines, nor were they overshadowed by the dreadnought's autocannon... And yet they were still incredibly powerful in their own right.
