Please add these to the compass in addition to North.
My brain is mush in the middle of a firefight and having to stop and stare at the minimap and remember that west is to the left and east the right, after I've found where north is hiding....can we just have all four directions marked for simplicities sake?

Just do what I do.
Always look North and draw the other letters on your screen with a marker.

I agree.
I'd also like to see the map screen always orientated with N up.
That'd mean either rotating the maps or always having N in the same direction.
Either is fine with me. |

i'd add the diagonals as well, nw, ne,sw,se.
wouldn't mind a small notch between that as well, then my squad could be like "the sniper is 1 tick north of nw" though if all squad members had a way of target painting/pointing this wouldn't be required. |

That could help, but it would probably get too cluttered. I'd say just add the notch for for the diagonals without labeling them. So you would have big notches labeled for N, E, S, W and then little unmarked notches for NW, NE, SW, SE

Yeah, I'll second this. Being able to quickly see and call out bearings is more essential in this game than some others.

honestly if i'm in a proto and there is all four directions on the minimap, it doesn't even matter, as soon as i check it i'm already dead.

...I'll see your cardinal directions and raise you a grid reference system on the tactical map. Essentially use the alpha-numeric grid CCP uses when they release the PDF versions of the maps |

Compass is probably keyed to the planets geodetic north, which is the north geographic pole and not the magnetic north.
Geodetic poles are determined by the axis of rotation and not the magnetic field of the planet.
My 2 cents... at least a big "N" and smaller e, s, w. Keep the rotation of the map so I know "up" on the map is the way i'm looking. |

Definitely!
N, E, S, W should be there in every case, but we should have the option to lock the rotation on the compass as well (with N up of course). |

I think adding E,S,W to the compass would make it considerably harder to read quickly. It's much easier to figure out which way is north when there's just one letter, it's just a quick glance and you're oriented without having to read anything. Adding the other directions doesn't give you any extra information, but clutters the HUD and makes you have to actually read the letters to figure out which direction you're facing. |
