I use two passive 11% resistance plates, a light repair unit and a set of 180mm steel plates. I use a scanner with either a heat sink or a light shield extender (not much else I can fit here, at the moment), an 80GJ Blaster (sometimes Stabilized or Scattered) with 2 of the lowest level Cycled Missiles. My HAV survives a clip of most swarms and is pretty cheap, all things considered, even if I am one of the worst pilots ever. I have a couple hundred thousand SP and am wondering what I should work towards. I can upgrade my plates to polycrystalline, my resistance plates (11%) to voltaic (15%) or active hardeners (20%), get a nitrous injector or upgrade to a Madrugar.
I want to get a Madrugar, but I'm a sucky pilot, so I don't see the point in using a more expensive HAV that I'll just blow up. As I'm just learning, I figure I'll go for the active hardeners and then the nitrous injector before finally upgrading to the Madrugar. Thoughts?

Now is the perfect time to experiment, All vehicle SP will be refunded in 1.7 due to vehicle and vehicle skills changing
Skill into things that look cool for now :p

That's what I figured. If HAVs are looking OK in a 1.7, I'll go ahead put my next couple of million SP into them. It looks like with the difference in modules that even cheaper vehicles can be effective, if even for a shorter period of time, and I like dropping half a million dollar bricks into the middle of combat every once in a while. My HAV costs around 320k ATM. I figure with a Madrugar, better hardeners, an injector and a better repair unit/two light repairers, it'll cost 450k or so.

1st off scrap the two passive hardeners for two active hardeners and loss the shield extender.
On your highs there are three modules to chose from scanner, heat sink, propulsion upgrade.
lows are typically, heavy rep, plate, two hardeners and pg upgrade. There are some other variations but require max fitting skills. |

Thanks. I'll go for the hardeners, first, then. I don't have propulsion, I already use a scanner and the heat sink's 10-20% boost at the moment isn't enough to save me against Madrugars, nor do I overheat a lot when killing infantry, hence the crappy Shield Extender. Are active heat sinks worth it for cheaper, brick tanks, or is a propulsion upgrade better? Every other time I die to AV, it's because I'm not fast enough to get away in time.
