Okay well I finally put together a solid carapace and titan armour squad, all with laser weaponry, with the best skills and equipment the XCOM project could provide.
Cpt Kador "Pitbull" Locke was killed instantaneously when a mysterious alien cybernetic disk atomised him in a single volley, previously in battle he had saved his comrade Cpt Callie "Pixie" Ryan and Lt Artyom "Moose" Lebdev from a vicious Muton attack, dodging through enemy fire to blow the mosters head off with a single Scattered Laser blast.
Unfortunately his sacrifice was in vain, in attempting to reposition the Heavy Laser Lt Lebdev was shot in the guts by a hidden Muton, but not before he killed two drones in consecurtive reaction volleys.
Cpl Alessandro Petrachi was killed in action, torn apart by a Cryssalid before anyone knew what was happening.
However bravely the squad fought on downing the Cyber Disk, Muton's and Cryssalid.
Sq Kostya Urlav was promoted for gallentry, single handedly shooting the Cyberdisk down. Lt Michael "Emo" Morel was wounded in action, caught in a brutal crossfire he defied all odds and brought down a Muton flanking him with a precise Laser Sniper Rifle headshot. Cpt Callie "Pixie" Ryan attended a short military funeral for her mentor Cpt Locke, and was subsequently placed in charge of the XCOM project.
She is now the worlds only hope of survival.
((Oh and for some reason in this game the name Satja is cursed and practically a death sentence, she died in my initial play through as a medic, was gravely wounded in this play through as a sniper, and died two missions prior to this one poisoned))

Deployed to combat the Alien threat in Leeds, United Kingdom, XCOM squad bravo encountered stiff resistance from the extra terrestrial forces, who deployed in greater numbers previously encountered by our field operatives in the past.
Sq Satja Askarin Sq Galm Fae Sq Demel Derpovsky Sq Maximia Beflas
Were deployed to counter the alien threat.
Galm showed his talents as a support operative mid mission, displaying unshakable will, and solid suppressive and covering fire abilities. Satja was identified for sniper candidacy as her infallible aim was enough to ensure the squad made it in the dying minutes of the conflict. Demel Derpovsky showed an unfortunate tendency to break under consistent fire, unloading a magazine at fellow rookie Satja, wounding her, and finally at the end of the match being severly wounded by Light Plasma rifle fire. He survived however and his wounds are teaching us about the alien menace. Maximia Beflas was listed as KIA, killed by an alien survivor of a grenade attack on and entrenched position. Her cover was stripped away, and finally her life taken by the invaders.
Reports showed UFO activity in the region, Voodoo One was scrambled against the menace bringing the UFO down.
Cpl Kador Ouryon Cpl Galm Fae Cpl Jakar Umbra Cpl Xander Kag
Were deployed against the ships defenders. Godspeed to them, and may they return safely.

OPERATION DYING PARAMOUR
Maj. Kador Ouryon Maj. Denak Kalamari Maj. Yun Hee Ryeon Sgt. Leithe Askarii and Cpl. Jakar Umbra
Were deployed on the outskirts of the German border to investigate a crashlanded UFO, a larger scout vessel, and capture an Outsider alien for investigation.
After being ambushed by three sectoids and two floaters, Cpl. Jakar Umbra was seperated from his squad, forced to fight an overwhelming force by himself. With coordination from Maj. Denak Kalamaei and Maj. Yun Hee Ryeon, they supported Cpl. Jakar Umbra as much as he could, and they managed to repel the attack, but the Cpl. was wounded.
Before Yun Hee could move in for emergency medical assistance, Cpl. Jakar Umbra was ambushed again by more sectoids and an outsider. In a heroic sacrifice, he rushed towards the outsider to incapacitate him with his Arc Thrower, which he succeeded in doing, but was killed in the crossfire.
Sgt. Leithe "Skinner" Askarii was recruited to reolace Cpl. Jakar Umbra

OPERATION UNCEASING MOON
After the succesful capture of an outsider in Operation Dying Paramour, the following investigation led to the discovery of an alien facility, and a squad was soon deployed to assault it.
Maj. Denak Kalamari Maj. Kador Ouryon Maj. Yun Hee Ryeon Sgt. Arston Yassavi Sgt. Leithe Askarii, support And Lt. Galm Fae were deployed to initiate Operation Unceasing Moon
After infiltrating and investigating the alien base, Sgt. Yassavi and Maj. Ouryon were ambushed by two Chrysallids. Maj. Kalamari tried to assist, but was soon pinned down by a squad of Mutons. Yassavi and Ouryon fought bravely, but were soon overwhelmed by the Chrysallids and were killed.
Advancing further to the base, the remaining squad members were ambushed again by Chrysallids, Sectoids and a Sectoid Commander. To further comlplicate things, the deceased bodies of Sgt. Yassavi and Maj. Ouryon were woken up again as "zombies", and the never before seen Sectoid Commander used his psionic abilities to take control of Maj. Ryeon and turn her against the rest of the squad. Thanks to the the deadly accurate sniping of Maj. Kalamari, Lt. Fae and Sgt. Askarii survived the assault, but were both gravely injured.
Maj. Ryeon, Cpt. Fae and Sgt. Askarii were gravely wounded and dispatched to the infirmary. Galm Fae was promoted to Maj., Leither Askarii was promoted to Lt. and Denak Kalamari was promoted to Col. and commanding officer.
Sgt. Yassavi and Maj. Ouryon received a short military funeral and their pictures were placed on the memorial wall.
I'm playing ironman mode on normal, it's really hard. :|

I have the assaults luck. my guys never get hurt, Kador has been on every mission so far and not been scratched. Lightning Reflexes, and that auto reaction shot CQC skill have meant that he has been taking down Chryssalids in 1-2's per turn and more.
If your assault is dead centre of your battle line he isn't in the right place.
I tend to see something like this
Assault -------------------------------- Support
------------------------Heavy----------------------------------------Heavy --------------------------------Sniper
That way my line is always covered by 2x Bulletstorm Heavies, Support is dead centre and able to drop smoke and Med kits, Sniper covers Left flank and can squad sight into right flank, while my dodging Assault mops up left flank.
I have also had some amazing snipers hitting and criticaling on <25% shots, mowing down Chryssalids, laying waste to Muton.
Only guys I have had trouble with have been Support and Heavies.....Heavies because they die too often, and Support because they never seem to be my rookies affinities.

I thought there was some mechanic to turn rookies into assaults that I was missing. I had a bunch of snipers I never used since I had two really good ones and I was constantly rotating out my Heavies. My assaults on the other hand were probably getting tired from fighting so much.

Survival rate in XCOM is lower than a Scout's in Dust and somebody always has to die for the protection of Earth in that game. I'll never forget when I almost lost an entire team to a bug that caused the entire crew of a battleship to spawn at the start of a mission. Thank goodness for Double Tap and a Plasma Sniper rifle.

Especially since I'm playing on Classic and the game likes to kick your teeth in on Classic since the jump from normal to classic as absolutely ridiculous.
It's interesting how after the same mission I lost Demel I gained Sergeant Maximia Beflas (Support). RIP Demel you took some of the bastards out before you died.
Galm would be pleased to know that Niina is turning in to one badass sniper. I have to swap her out with Satja so that Satja can get some field experience as a Sniper before things escalate too much. Kador and Galm are both Heavies. Denak is currently my only Assault so I'm desperately fighting to keep him alive. I'm a Support so yay. Foley is Support and Doniken is Support. Yun Hee Ryeon has yet to specialise due to being heavily wounded in her first mission.
Currently the only relevant deaths have been Demel and Heathen Bastard who both died on their first missions. The only other death was an unnamed rookie who died in the game's very first mission. (I don't play the tutorial.)

Yeah Galm....died horribly during one fateful mission.... It wasn't your fault though......... as loathe as I am to admit this...Leithe went....well he got Mind controlled..... during the brief 3 turns he was under enemy control he was dead centre of my battle line....he killed Galm, critically wounded Satja at which point I decided to mercilessly cut him down.....
It was a dark day.... so far though Niina is badass.
She has 3rd highest kill count in my squad behind

Following the success of the first terror mission during which Lt. Niina Eskola, Sergeant Jakar umbra, Sgt. Kador Ouryon and Sgt Maximia Beflas kept their cool and emerged unscathed even in the face of a dangerous and terrifying new enemy to be revealed as a Chryssalid, troop morale has increased (just playing it up) and a rash of success across the board for XCOM begins to occur. Denak was unfortunately wounded prior to that mission and was unable to bring his wrath to the battlefield.
Fear not Heathen you gave everything the bird, including the bastard that killed you.
With XCOM's next directive to capture a live alien, and preparations for the construction of the facilities to house captives being made, hopefully this rash of successes can continue.

I'm glad I'm alive in your play through. What am I?
I recommend, and I'm sure you know this, stabilizing 3 continents....and when they start to panic, hit the alien base for a full -2 modifier world wide to panic. It stabilized, for me, Europe where I am stationed, North America, Asia, and Africa. So all I have lost is South America.
And now I have time to begin second phase research on Titan Armour, Plasma weapons, SHIV, and upgraded fighters.

You sir are a Heavy and you were my go to heavy for a while so keeping you alive was vital as is keeping that initial team of guys who are levelling up. Satja is a bad ass Sniper but of a different type to what I usually do since she's more of a mobile Sniper as opposed to Niina being a squad sight Sniper. I nicknamed Satja 'Kameira' by the way.
Galm Fae is now Galm 'Warrior Nine' Fae as he has reached the rank of Sergeant. I'm not quite sure what to nickname Niina so for now she is Niina 'Zero' Eskola with the current highest kill count at 16 followed by Kador's 14 and Denak's 11.

I would have made Satja a scout too, Niina is my long guns shooter, who spends most matches stationary, Satja is my Skeleton Suit ,mobile marksman.

If you get the opportunity it's totally worth playing the original X-COM games. It'll also make you realise how easy Enemy Unknown and Within go on you.
Nothing quite like an Ethereal base and everyone murdering each other, Mutons raiding your base with Blaster Launchers. And Lobstermen, my god, Lobstermen. Have had them survive two rounds of a Disruptor Pulse Launcher which is akin to a small nuke in destructive power. Vibro blades and thermic lances are the only expedient methods of engagement.
And that's not to mention the headache of nations reducing funding and signing treaties with the aliens on the sly at the worst possible time, new bases inevitably getting attacked while airspace activity dwindles to nothing within the area you finally got a proper setup for.
Door opening was also a more dangerous business in those days, designated point man's not a nice job. The usual warning that there's a Blaster Launcher wielding alien around the corner is an explosion accompanied by a scream.
Did I mention that Blaster Launchers are smart low-yield guided nukes? They can flit around terrain across the several waypoints the wielder inputs, weaving around and above obstacles to detonate at their terminus with incredible force.
But enough of that, you've got a war to win. Never give in, never surrender. Tradition is that X-COM are buried 7-feet under when they fall as, having died in protection of the Earth, they are closer to it than anyone. |

After our interceptor Raven-1 succesfully shot down UFO-01, the Skyranger was sent to investigate the wreck with:
Cpl. Denak Kalamari Sq. Kador Ouryon Sq. Yun Hee Ryeon and Sq. Jakar Umbra
Upon landing to the crash site, Sectoids ambushed the strike team, but were quickly dispatched after the succesful coordination of the entire team, where Sq. Umbra and Ouryon sustained minor injuries. After reaching the wreck, the strike team came in contact with an "Outsider" who critically wounded Sq. Ryeon and pinned Sq. Umbra down. Thanks to the sharp eye of Cpl. Kalamari, the Outsider was killed and the UFO wreck cleared.
Sq. Ouryon was promoted to Cpl., and sent to the infirmary for four days to heal his injuries. Sq. Umbra was sent to the infirmary for four days to heal his injuries. Sq. As it stands my roster looks like this:
- Major Kador 'Adamance' Ouryon - Heavy Kills:31
- Major Denak 'Squid' Kalamari - Assault Kills:29
- Captain Jakar 'Second Hex' Umbra - Support Kills:13
- Captain Niina 'Longbow' Eskola - Sniper Kills:17
- Captain Satja 'Kameira' Askarin - Sniper Kills:16
- Lt. Galm 'Warrior Nine' Fae - Heavy Kills:10
- Lt. Maximia 'Short Fuse' Beflas - Support Kills:3
- Lt. Xander 'Triple X' Kag - Assault Kills: 5
- Corporal Yun Hee Ryeon - Heavy Kills:2
- Squaddie Doniken Vokera - Support Kills:3
That's everyone who has kills. I've been trying to rotate as much as possible but I'm afraid to carry the less experienced guys on newer mission. I kind of forgot the that I had built the Officer Training School as well and just did so now I can have a couple of rookies tag along while maintaining squad power.
Kador loves grenades and rockets by the way, hence the kill count. Denak runs head first into danger relying on his lightning reflexes to get him up close and personal for the kill. I've been using Satja a bit more lately hence why Niina's kill count has not increased.
Now for our next report:
The Terror Mission in Mexico had to be aborted as Chryssalid after Chryssalid continued to pour out of the building, creating more as zombies followed through. With the threat of death literally looming over members of the squad and everyone needing to reload their weapons, the commander in charge called for a tactical withdrawal. The commander is quoted as saying, "**** it! Abort! Mexico's on their own!" Mexico along with a few two other countries swiftly pulled funding from the XCOM project at month's end.

OPERATION PURPLE DAWN
After recent discoveries with Xeno-biology done by the research lab, the XCOM project was tasked with capturing a live Sectoid alien. With coordination between the engineering and research wings, the Arc thrower was developed to stun and capture aliens, while an alien containment facility was constructed to hold said alien. A few days passed and reports started coming in of alien abductions in Germany, and the following striketeam was dispatched, equipped with carapace armor, latest body armor technology developed by the research lab:
Cpt. Denak Kalamari Sgt. Yun Hee Ryeon Cpl. Kador Ouryon Cpl. Jakar Umbra Sq. Galm Fae, assault Sq. Satja Askarin, support
Strike team was deployed on the outskirts of a German city, where they systematically began searching for alien hostiles and neutralize them. Things were following according to the plan, and a Sectoid alien could be located for capture. As the strike team was pinning down the alien while Sgt. Ryeln advanced to stun him with her arc thrower, a "Cyberdisk", disk-like alien robot, was spotted.
With all firepower focused on taking down the cyberdisk and its assisting drones, Sgt. Ryeon continued advancing towards the sectoid alien with the support of Cpl. Umbra and Sq. Askarin, and quickly incapacitated the alien with the arc thrower. Three Thinmen ambushed Sgt. Ryeon, Sq. Askarin and Cpl. Umbra after the sectoid alien was captured, who were severely wounded fending them off as the majority of the strike team was still focused on taking down the cyberdisk. Unfortunately, Cpl. Umbra,Sq. Askarin and Sgt. Reyon were caught in the blast radius of the cyberdisk as it self-destructed, killing them instantly.
DEBRIEF
Cpt. Kalamari was promoted to Maj. and he remains the leader of the strike team. Cpl. Ouryon was promoted to Sgt. and sent to the infirmary to tend to his injuries. Sq. Fae was promoted to Cpl. and sent to the infkrmary to tend to his injuries. Sgt. Ryeon, Cpl. Umbra and Sq. Askarin receiced a short military funeral, and had rheir pictures posted on the memory wall.
Squaddies Maximia Beflas, heavy, Arston Yassavi, support and Jandice Ymladris, heavy were recruited.

I am however glad my other psionic is also an Assault trooper, that way he is constantly guarded by Locke, and able to Psyk the hell outta Muton at close range.
I also am saddened a realised I could have made my core team more psionic by buying the Iron Will perk in officers training back at the start of the game.

Out of curiosity? Do you actually like grenades? (I don't necessarily mean spam them) but if you see an opportunity to take out or otherwise wound multiple people do you use it?

Unfortunately, due to Satja's capable abilities with her pistol, the Outsider was quickly put down the instant it revealed itself rather than wounded which would have led to its capture. XCOM command can find no fault with Satja despite her panic and firing upon a friendly in the same mission. After a quickly administered psychological evaluation, during which it was revealed that Satja has horrible nightmares but deemed fit for duty, Satja was dispatch with a squad to quell a terror attack in Mexico. Current results are pending. XANDER KAG wrote:That's kind of weird.... I play similar to that in dust, I am an assault who keeps a little back from the frontline picking off targets with my SCR.... I'm kind of glad my "avatar" character isn't psionic....it would ruin his character....instead he is a 20+ HP Assault. I am however glad my other psionic is also an Assault trooper, that way he is constantly guarded by Locke, and able to Psyk the hell outta Muton at close range. I haven't used grenades in my play through's ever.
But in general yes I do like explosions and destruction.

Eugh this game takes longer to set up at the start than it does to play. Finding an AUS/NZ Assault start f game is impossible. |

I didn't want to mention this...... Luna Angelo was killed laying down her life for the worlds first psionic soldier. Staring into the juggernaut mass of a Muto Beserker she held her ground despite two plasma grenades finding their mark on her position.
She killed two drones and a Heavy Floater....but the berserker was not noticed until it was upon her position. She was crushed under one of its alloy shod fists. covering Nathan Locke, as he fell back in the face of three sectoid commanders.
However her sacrifice did not go in vain. A Cyberdisk, rather than fire its main cannon, launched a grenade again her, three Muton missed their shots, and she resisted a Sectoid commanders Mind Control...which led me to believe she would have been a potent psionic had she lived.
The squad managed to regroup on Aisha "Voodoo" Neumann, "Twitch" the psionic was able to Psi Inspire his comrades, rendering the Sectoid Commanders powers useless, and Mindfrayed both with ease.
"Longbow" Eskola successfully chained two double tap actions to kill all 3 Muton and Berserker, while Callie "Dakka" Vines took down the Cyber Disk and Drones. |

At least she went down fighting and took 3 of the enemy with her. And that Mind Control resistance is (was) awesome. Very nice. Too bad we don't have video, this would make a good movie.

Lol its not hard as you play you naturally become attached to certain squaddies who pull of epic moves, look like you or your friends, or save your other fav squad members ass when they are about to die. Eventually by your second attempt at the game you have guys coming back from the first play through, others who were awesome, or effective, or just downright funny. |

Considering picking up some proper recording gear given that I would perhaps like to create some content....but first and foremost I'm looking into the logistics of what I really need in terms of hardware and software to make this a reality.
In terms of things I would do.....
Tales of Symphonia Lets Play Valkyria Chronicles Lets play XCOM Lets play
All sorts of goodies. |
