So i just recently squadded up with someone who only played for a month so far, and capped out the match after. So after hearing her talk about how she wanted to pick up tanking, i switched off to my alt and had her reinvite me.
My tanking/lav alt.
After going into the first match and noticing the AV and utter pubstomp happening, i called in a charbydis, fitted with nitro, scanner, shield extender, resistance boost and double pg's. We just laughed our asses off as i ran over Avers and got sniped out by AI rail turrets while i'm barrel rolling off of mountains.
Then i thought i'd craft an Abron, fitted for burst tanking and turret murdering, seeing as she pulled of 3 kills using my std accel missile, so i buffed it up: at-1 cycled, scanner, basic hardener, and 60 mm poly plate, we ran 3/0 and 5/0 via road kill and turret kills respectively.
Throughout the 4-6 matches we played, i just couldn't stop laughing my ass off, seeing as Avers were getting murdered, and sometimes an AV nade would kill me outta my seat.
That night i lost 1.7million isk, and actually had to borrow isk. Albeit we just laughed our asses off and didnt care.
Final verdict: methanas/abrons with no repper are beast when you have a squadmate/repper willing to use your LaV as more than simple transport.

Criminally under appreciated post here, glad I found it. Yeah, LAVs are surprisingly effective when you can find a person willing to jump in with you and actually gun in your turret. I'm surprised you guys were comfortable with a Missile turret as well as I find them to be pretty unwieldy in moving vehicles. Hopefully one day CCP will differentiate the colors between Militia tier vehicles and STD tier vehicles so people will be more willing to jump into the back of a real fitted LAV.
In any case I'm greatly looking forward to using more LAVs the moment 1.7 hits, it'll be harder to fit a Methana with Missiles (they've set up the PG and CPU values in a way where Missiles are easier to fit on Cal. Vehicles and Blasters are easier to fit on Gal. Vehicles to match up with their respective races) but with the monstrous shield regen on a Saga (285 shields a second!) combined with the fact that the speeds of each vehicle have been normalized across the board means you'll be able to fit a pretty competent one with minimal SP investment (ie. without needing Fitting Optimization skills).
1.7 Saga w/o Fitting Op. High - Complex Shield Extender + Basic/Enhanced/Complex Fuel Injector (whichever you prefer or have the skills to fit) Low - Ammo Expansion Turret - AT-1 Missile Launcher
You'll be rocking 1.6k Shields and be using your Nitrous to get you out of sticky situations and letting your base Shield Regen handle the healing.

Wow, you went 3-0 running people over in an LAV? I'm blown away by your FPS skill. What's next, 4-2 forging from a tower? |

I wish I was there
But you seem to have better luck than me with your LLAVs.
Why are Scout LAVs so under used? Those things are super fast.

because they're ridiculously expensive and actually no faster than a Baloch with a Jovian. They're rubbish, unfortunately. If all you want is to go fast, get a Charybdis w/ 2x Jovians in the lows and a nitrous in the highs.
Compare the listed stats for the Abron and the Baloch... you'll be very disappointed.
EDIT: OP, I hope you told your friend to run very far away from tanking... no need for another person to rage-quit the game. |

^ i did tell her on several occasions "be prepared to lose all the isk you have banked, but it's extremely rewarding when it works."
I find that the passive acceleration buff is pretty worthwhile, and the turret rotation means your gunner can aim better.
