*activates hardmode* I used to play scouts in Chromosome, I think I'll start going back. Wish me luck.
Unfortunately, it'll be months before I can get a proto scout.

scouts fun as hell but don't bother before adv suits or playing in PC. I play mini scout, if you chose this route I suggest you use your lows for a kinkat and a cardstab, I haven't found anything else that works as well, that said I haven;t tried dampers. |

Good choice, I recently specced into proto gal scout as I got tired of the logi. It is so much fun, the standard frame can get allot of kills with the breach shotgun or exile if you go commando style and remote explosives. Warpoints are gained by dropping droplink in strategic locations unless your team already have droplinks all over the place. I have soo many times broken the redlining by running behind enemy lines and placing dropuplinks. Hacking stuff behind enemy lines also racks up allot of warpoints.
I do not care about tanking on the standard frame, the advanced suit with two complex shield extenders and the high 40hp/s shield recharge is godly combined with the speed, low profile, and long scanning range. I have the dragonfly scout BPO and my standard builds only cost 5-8k isk, the medium builds is 20-40k isk both cheap enough to make a profit each match.
My proto scout at 125k isk is only used when being proto stomped and I rarely expect to get out with a profit but I make sure that several red dot proto players will loose isk as well
Proto stomping is boring, I always run in standard suit to start and slowly go up through my builds if the opposite team is stronger than my own team.
I recommend you start by going scout level 3 and dampening level 4, that is enough to passively avoid advanced scanners. Proto scanners in pubs are rare compared to the use of advanced scanners. Then focus on scanning range, these are the two traits I take full advantage of, I prefer to shield/armor tank above speed tanking and have not spend any SP in biotics. |

* uh oh, you activated extreme hardmode by mistake, disengage from scout specing at once*
Seriously its a little rough, hope you have fun though, maybe your gal will be a little easier than this minja lol.

Do it dude!
It's a total pain in the ass, you die in milliseconds, but my god its fun.
I went Minmatar proto, going Gallente proto now and I actually prefer Gallente, feels so much more rewarding with 450+ armour @ 9 m/s
Good luck.

Fantastic advice, thank you very much! I actually have dampening 5 already, and scout 3 isn't too far away.
The equipment choice is the main thing that I'm wondering about. A scanner is great for intel, remote explosives are hilarious, drop uplinks are tactically brilliant, and nanohives allow resupply. But I only have 1 equipment slot.
How do you find the passive scanning?

I compare my Duvolle proto scout with a Gallente T2 frigate in EVE. Being quick and having high dps with the blasters/blaster rifle in close range before moving towards next target. Being small and squishy means I will only engage single larger targets but deal allot of dps in short period of time before they can react and they are too slow to escape. Need to get up close quickly due to shorter blaster range, this is where the low scanning profile and scanning range comes are used. They will not know I have moved into blaster range before it is too late. |

And speed tanking does work to a lesser degree not yet comparable to the T2 frigate in EVE. But you need to get really close and move quickly, just like EVE you cannot speed tank unless you are very close to the target. That happens to me when I am in my heavy suit, some players are able to strafe around me up close and I am not able to track them with the HMG, not even scratching their shields before I am dead. This is something I need to practice with my scout suits, quicker reflexes are needed and high stamina . And also like EVE, room is needed to strafe around the target to avoid being tracked by the bigger target. Only issue here it the difference between ds3/mouse, you can avoid the ds3 from tracking you but the mouse is quicker, just hope the lack of aim assist on the mouse user is enough to keep you alive as he can track you no matter how fast you run. |

You may only have one slot but you'll get to choose your fit often enough... so just get your fit together and then make variants for uplink, scanner, REs, nano or whatever.
If you haven't already you'll want to work on your CPU and PG if you want good equipment though... it's endless. |

I agree, we could use another equipment slot. I used to run the active scanner in the beginning, both to help myself and joining squads for the extra warpoints gained. It is more rare now that I have scout to level 5, scan range level 3 and enhanced scan range modules. One of my basic scout suits have two enhanced scan range modules, the longer scan range of the active scanner is no longer needed as the red dots are now 100% unaware that I am close by compared to when they have the you have been scanned message showing. The advanced active scanner takes up allot of cpu/power on the scout suit, I have only used this on advanced suits and often have to add a CPU module also. Fun to use when in squads or hunting snipers etc.
The passive scanning is godly, being able to see on tachnet when they have their front or back turned in your direction it is very easy to sneak up and get the first surprise shot with the shotgun. In my experience about 30meters range are needed before it really start to shine. Range long enough to see targets on tachnet before they have seen you and enough distance to quickly run away if you see the red blob moving in your direction. This also helps when hacking stuff, you see when red dots are spawning or moving towards the object your are hacking.
The breach with two shots are sufficient to 90% of the targets, you can be sure they will panick and you can finish them off with the SMG or scrambler pistol. I prefer scrambler pistol for the added range.
I only have nano hives on the suits which are running assault rifles, I run out of ammunition too quickly. Else it is droplinks for the initial spawn and later remote explosives on my shotgun suits.
The breach AR is also fun to use, it will not run out of ammunition as quickly as the regular AR and I rarely need nanohives running the breach AR. This feels more like the T2 frigate in EVE, with the even shorter range and higher damage per shot.
This is all speaking from pub matches experience, never tried the scout in PC matches. |
