I've seen it pop up from time to time and was just wondering how many people here used to play MAG.

Quite a few.
If you think Plasma Rifles take skill to use and are fine as they are, you are the problem.

I did. This game has a sver and valor corp but no large raven corp unfortunately. Also I think some dropsuits are named sver raven and valor.
Great game pity it didn't succeed. |

I heard recently that the plan was to shut MAG down completely. IIRC, the dev (who also created the SOCOM series) closed its doors, which is the likely reason such an ambitious project lost its support and is set to close. I did play it for a short while, as a SVER soldier. It had one of the deepest class/weapon customization systems of its time, and a well-designed preset Chain of Command structure that rewarded both good orders and good listeners. Sad to see it die off, but it was only a matter of time given the circumstances.
Although DUST is considered to be MAG's spiritual successor, progress towards the same sense of scale - and CCP's vision in general - has been painfully slow. I have one or two opinions as to rectifying this issue, but that's for another time.
For those switching over to PS4 that want a MAG-style experience, the closest thing for the known future is PlanetSide 2, which is set to release on the console sometime in 2014. Although it has recently been optimized on PC, I recommend ensuring your computer is at least competent as a gaming machine before downloading it from either SoE or Steam.
P.S. (had to bring this up) Although many say PS2 is competing with DUST, it's good to remember that F2P games, as a whole, do not expressly compete for a given amount of money. This is because they are often structured so that players can pay approximately what they wish on a given title, allowing them to split their gaming money between multiple titles, or none at all, if they so choose. Take SoE, for example. their entire MMO library is now F2P. If F2P games cut into each other's earnings by a significant amount, that would have been quite a dumb change, as they would have been cutting into their own earnings. Of course, many of these games make more now than they ever did on subscription models. |

Still remember my first my first dom match in MAG (at the reactor) 45 mins of "JEBUS ****ING HELL WAS THAT AN AIRSTRIKE?!"
I would be curious to know if CCP has plans to increase the player numbers in Dust, the 128's were fun and far more intense than anything else I've played. Might be a good angle to set them apart too since as far as I know no one else is doing anything close to that scale.
