The following are request from an EVE pilot.
Warbarge is coming to PC 2.0 that's great, but I think it would be great if we could have tech 2 ships specifically made for orbital support.
What would said ship be?
1. A ship that could actually tank 2. A ship that could use all types of orbital ammo, and not be limited 3. A ship that could provide Team bonuses (sprint, better scan, dampening, etc.) 4. A ship that can actually view a map of the battlefield the same map you can see on Dust when you are about to deploy. That way the EVE player can relay tactical information to his corp mates. 5. A ship with a drone bay to help defend itself
This is my request, a war barge is great, but this seems like it would be less expensive and slightly more affective. A war barge just sounds expensive and is likely to be a sitting duck, a waste of money.
What I'm essentially asking for is a tech 2 Battlecruiser that meets those requirements and one more thing.
lift the issue of gun size for orbital stikes. We want our medium size turrets and large size turrets. If I'm gonna be a sitting duck I wanna be able to shoot back before my ship instapops. |

I totally agree with you. |

Note that I am not an Eve pilot, but I was under the impression that destroyers were capable of orbitals and combat like this.

You want to go from a tech 1 destroyer, which costs approx 1 million ISK unfitted, to a tech 2 battlecruiser, which costs approx 230 million ISK unfitted.
Fitted and rigged, that's probably close to half a billion ISK that you're wanting to park over a planet in low-sec. You'd get murdered by every neutral in system just for the killmail alone.

Destroyers are indeed extremely capable combat ships. Very good mobility and damage output for a very low ISK investment. Their downside is poor range and extremely poor tanking ability.
The issue I believe the OP is trying to address is that destroyers are the second smallest class of ship in the game, and that their strength lays in their mobility. They're good hit-and-run operations, and for escaping when trouble shows up, but they're not much use if you intend to stand your ground.
That being said, I don't believe there is anything stopping the OP from fitting small turrets onto a larger ship if he really wants a better tank, not that I see it doing him much good unless he has a decently sized corp behind him to provide logi support and help him hold the field.

Many of the things you described are what has been called the Commander role before. It would be interesting if it were EVE side instead of DUST side... |

Not really, a destroyer is capable of shooting yes, but it is easily destroyed, some of them don't have drone bays, and they only get bonuses to their racial specific turret type, meaning minmatar ships use projectile ammo, so only emp orbital, otherwise I'd have to put rails or lasers on it, which takes away from it's combat ability a lot.
Destroyers were not made specifically for orbital support, and that is what I'm asking for, a ship made specifically for orbital support.
Let's not overlook the idea of an EVE player being able to view the map and provide tactical intel to the Dust players on the ground. |
