Hello, so i have been playing Dust for some few months but still can't find my right calling. So i thought why not give the good old soma a try. Does anyone has an build for soma within the 500 K SP limit? ( Turrets and upgrades) |

Sorry, but with 500k, you can't in your right mind, call a somo "GOOD"
Though I would say focus on resistances and HP, and don't forget a Shield booster.

Hey, I've been a tanker since i started playing and right now, the two best tanks are stock sicas and fully fitted madrugars. Somas are garbage, no matter how you fit them.
If you want to get into tanks, you need at least 3 mil SP saved up. When 1.7 drops, it'll come down to just under 800k SP. Save your SP until then, wait to see how tanks do for a couple weeks, and THEN decide if you want to do it. In the meantime, go here: Learning Coalition.

To add to CharCharOdell you might as well forget about pulling out a tank until you've lvled up your skills because you are in for a unpleasant surprise when you run into more experienced players. Tanking with a low SP investment is hard tanking with a high SP investment is hard. You really have to be beyond the numbers and think outside the box to tank. I have been operating Tanks Dropships and Lavs almost every vehicle in the game both shield and armor and I have near max skills for all vehicles. At the end of the day you need a combination of HIGH sp, tatics and teamwork to be sucessful. I am pretty much a mad scientist when it comes to vehicles im not afraid to try any fit imaginable anything that could possibly give you a slight advantage I lose vehicles daily. My best advice its to pick 1 vehicle and max it out with the right mindset and skills you can make any vehicle work.
The problem is what do you entend to do with that vehicle all are not created equally be all are capable of destroying the other due to human error. You are not a tank driver you're not a dropship pilot or a lav driver you are an operator. Use your vehicles for a specific task and you wont have problems. |

Oy Vey, such negativity!
I'm going to offer a more positive alternative. This is with the pre-supposition, that sometimes, yes, it IS NICE to be able to pull out a tank, that will survive more than 10 seconds on the battlefield. And being able to survive ONE swarm or forgegun, while not as nice as 3, is better than 0
So, first off, ignore the post about shield boosters. Shield boosters are for shield based tanks. That would be the sica, not soma Soma are armored, if I recall.
Some tips:
* Unlike dropsuits, the 'base' modules of armor and shield, are FAR SUPERIOR to the freebie militia ones. So, if you're going to use a module in either, then try to get at least one level into it.
* Getting the non-militia power modules, makes a huge difference.
* getting the non-militia repairer, makes a huge difference. Get the level 2 one,for the least power drain ( "IG-L" type)
* Unlocking the non-militia weapons, makes a huge difference to power/cpu. So be sure to unlock large and small hybrid turrets, initially. Save missiles for later.
Also(again, unlike dropsuits) For many things, you only need level *3* for the good stuff, not level 5. So, Shield extender level 3 gives you Azeotropic stuff. Similarly Armor plate level 3 gives you the maximum plates
ALSooo... Sometimes the level 2 stuff can be better then the level 3 stuff, for your needs Initially, it seems like a step down, since the protection level is actually lower than the base level. However, the POWER REQUIREMENTS are lower. So, in a particular tank, you may be able to fit any of:
1x 60m Steel Plate = +680 armor @145pg 0x 120m Steel Plate = +0 armor @ 580pg 2x60 nanofibre = 2x 612 = 1224 armor @232pg
Finally... both shield extenders, and armor plates, have prerequisits you have to unlock :( And the armor prerequisite, is LOWER than the shield! Armor needs only level2. Shields need level 3 prereq
So,the bottom line is, it's easy to put together a Soma that has 5000+ armor, within your limitations, I think. Once you've done that, then you can put puts into "Vehicle Armor Upgrades" to improve your passive resistances.

Don't listen to anyone who thinks shield mods on an armor tank or thinks armor tanks take less SP. An armor tank requires that you have armor adaption to lvl 5, while shields only need it to lvl 3 for the good modules.
This guy is clueless. If you ask any real tankers (bob, void, exmaple, attorney, etc), they'll probably tell you to not even attempt tanking until 1.7 when we know if it'll be useful or not. In the meantime, save yourself some isk and rage; just save your SP. If you MUST tank, then just get a stock sica and rail snipe. Honestly, either use a stock sica or a 1.4 mil madrugar. Anything in between won't last 10 seconds and cost you too much isk.
If you want to meet some expxerienced tankers, go to this chat:

In other news, The Learning Coalition recommends that you only play free starter infantry fits, until you have invested at least 10mil SP into dropsuits and upgrades, and unlocked at least 1 proto suit. Because anything less, is just not combat and isk-effective

We teach our newberries to win. If I tell a newberry to use free fittings and they get 14:14 in a battle, they may get 240k net profit. If you teach your newberries to rely on their gear to win the fight for them, and they use ADV or PRO and get 14:1 netting 240K ISK from the battle, our newberries have more money than yours do. We teach them how to use tactics and personal skill to win. We teach them to squeeze out every bit of tank and dps from the worst gear there is, so when they do choose to go hard, it's easier for them. In Chromosome, a similar ideology to yours was rampant among tankers- GET MARAUDER SPEND ISK. However, when the truly talented tankers took them on, the talented tankers would win through tactics. Also consider this: TTK is incredibly low right now, so the difference between a STD and ADV suit is very small, as far as TTK.
I almost exclusively run mlt and std suits in pubs and still manage to get over 10 kills. I make 100% profit, usually. At worst, 90%. My newberries learn the same thing.
You forget to remind them that swarm launchers don't lock onto infantry.
Our newberries are better trained, wealthier, and better equipped than yours are. I guarantee it.
Also, I will personally take on any 1 of your instructors and remind you why the Learning Coalition is better. If I make a list of our top instructors, the community will recognize their names. if you make a list of yours, nobody will bat an eye.
I also like that you find us bothersome enough to put alts into IG. Really, it's flattering. I'd do it to DU, but there wouldn't be anything worth finding out because I know that your curriculum is garbage.

If you're just starting out rail snipe, use one plate, one repairer, one extender, and try out fits that will let you survive. Buffer, resist, speed and range are going to be your only chance at the moment and everything that makes tanks viable needs a lot of SP invested.
Basically try to take out enemy vehicles and turret installations, circle around the perimeter of the map and never, ever, ever go into a city socket if you see any non militia grenades in the killfeed, Good luck. |

My commendations to Blaze Ashra, though, for actually posting Useful Details in forum, rather than attempting to brag about how uber his corp is.
