It's possible to hack and repair at the same time. Was in a PC match, couldn't decide whether to heal the heavy hacking the point or help him hack with my awesome hacking bonus, so a whipped out the repair tool, started healing him and walked up to begin the hack, thinking it would cancel the heal. It didn't.
Granted, you have to get your fingers in an awkward position because you need to be holding down the trigger button as well as the hack button, but it's fun to practice.
If you feel generous, the extra ISK you generate with the added WP you gain from this little trick would be gladly used to further research into dropship survivability. 
Disclaimer: I just remembered I did this and quickly rushed to make a thread on it and it may have been a once off and no one may be able to replicate it. But I was certainly gaining triage points as I hacked the point with the heavy I was repairing, that much I remember.

Unrelated tip, carry an AR: it's not only the best protection for it's fitting, but you can check HP of nearby (and even farther) alies
