CCP, you created a social game. And I love it.
But, please, I urge you to add some new mechanics to support this. Some of us don't have a mic. It shouldn't be a requirement to play this game. Right now, every Corporation asks for a mic as requirement to join, because it's the only way to communicate. Not to mention that sometimes you can't use your mic even if you got one. Did you ever play a PC match at 3AM with someone sleeping in the same room?
This request is very simple and it would allow people to communicate in real time and have fun without a mic or headset.
Basically, the squad chat should be displayed on the in-game HUD, at the bottom of the screen, for a maximum of 3 lines. The exceeding text would be deleted form the HUD and simply displayed on the hidden squad chat. You might use some kind of sound to inform the players that a squad mate typed something.
Also, the Squad Chat should be automatically opened by pressing select while in game, so if you have a PS3 keyboard, it would be almost immediate to open the Chat and type a simple sentence, it wouldn't take more than 5 seconds for a sentence or more than 1-2 seconds for a single word ("ammo", "heal", "cover", etc...).
I feel like this is absolutely necessary and I would love to see this happening really, really soon. I believe it is a priority. I want this game to grow and support its own massive social content.
Thank you very much for your attention.

Here Here!
I'm debating whether to promote the "Thanes Of Dust" as a mic free corp just because of the number of mercs who post "no mic" in LOCAL |

And not ALL corps require mics. We Who Walk Alone PREFER mics, but it's not required.

+1 I have mic (couple of them). But i just can't use them when i play DUST late at night. For the most trivial reason stated in OP: my family is asleep. Except me and my two crazy cats loudly scratching every wooden surface (or chasing each other around the apartment) and cause me to interrupt the play every 20 mins and try to convince them to play something else than scratch-a-hatch so not to wake up rest of the folks.
Thous displaying team/squad channel messages on the HUD would be most welcomed for late night insomniacs bestowed with sleeper families
Also some "shortcut" for displaying on-screen keyboard would also be helpful. Say double tap SELECT (or channels) button would allow you to directly post to your last active/default battle channel (team or squad). Name of the channel displayed somewhere as well.

In addition to this idea, if people who're talking pulse on the minimap, or glow with a different colour, or maybe have a mic appear next to their nametag like in some FPS'. So if they ARE asking for ammo or heals, I can locate them easily.
And by people talking, I mean including people typing in squad chat. At the very least, have the comms bar as optionally visible when in battle.I know I want to see people typing if they have no mic and I can easily check if I have to; but those who're annoyed with it they can choose to switch it off.
