Over the past 3 months I've been dealing with my poor PS3 slim's slow death. The warranty is expired and I'm a pretty poor guy. The thing is I know what's wrong with it but I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. The GPU is overheating. At first I could just wait and restart the PS3 after about 15 minutes, but as of late, it dies before I can even get to the recovery menu. Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing before? I've done some reading around and if it's not completely dead, I can look into replacing the thermal paste. I've also seen people suggesting to bake it back together, but that just sounds like a way to play your PS3 for a final hurrah of about 3 or 4 hours. Any suggestions would be welcome (excludin hurrr replace it). |

Unless the solder holding the GPU has cracked from over heating baking it or a "reflow" shouldn't be needed so don't go chucking it in an oven just yet. If it doesn't turn on at all or has a yellow? light that may well be needed but there is a safer way using a heat gun. I'd go ahead and look at guides / youtube videos on how to safely take apart the PS3, give it a good clean removing any dust from blocked vents etc and go ahead and apply some decent thermal paste like you mentioned. |

Yeah I've taken it apart and everything, even replaced the hard drive because that's what I initially thought was the problem. It's really weird, I'll turn it on, do the whole holding the power button ritual. Beep, beep beep, beep beep beep..... nothing. When I shut it off I hear this chunk sound (only sometimes). It's also worth noting that the optical audio thing on the back won't power on (not sure if this matters because I've never used it) |

Did you already try dusting it for a while?
Mine was acting up like that, so I dusted it out and put it in a box with a hair dryer for a while and it worked fine for a few days afterwards. I was able to at least pull my save data, some picture files, and a few other things off of there before it decided to give out on me completely.
Some local game stores where I live actually fix PS3s, but I decided to just buy a brand new super slim one and not make the same mistake I did with my last one (i.e. not letting it collect dust and overheat)
The reason mine went out was because I ran it for too long while it was overheating. It got to a very hot temperature and melted one of the connections which prevented it from starting up.
If you don't have a lot of cash but still want another PS3 you could consider buying a used PS3. There might be someone with a PS3 that isn't able to read disks but can still play games like Dust perfectly fine. As for NEW PS3s, the cheapest one is a $200 model with a very small amount of storage space, which is great as long as you don't plan on downloading a ton of games.
Hope this helps.

What happens if you try and power up normally without going through the beep beep menu? (I forgot what it's actually called lol) |

No video output. It also seems the usb ports don't send any power out when I start it that way. |

Ah it may have already happened like Shay said then, quite possibly a reflow is what you need >_< |

Sounds exactly like what I did to mine, although it was well ventilated. We only have one wireless router aaaaaalll the way on the other side of the house so I had to place it in the window to get a decent signal strength. Played dust heavily all summer with the sun beating down on my poor machine :(

Pro tip : Go to Wal-Mart, buy a new slim.
Clean up your old slim so that it looks nice and new.
Put old broken slim in box, after taking out hard drive and replacing it with that of the new one (if you care about keeping your ****. Otherwise, wipe it and do a full reset)
Return it.
Enjoy your new, fully functioning PS3 for free. |

Since dust is releases at PS3s death I expect this sort of thing to increase. People aren't going to have PS3s for another 4 years , in 4 years they will all be broken |

Not even. Wal-mart will send it to Sony, who'll just refurbish it and sell it anyways once it's working again.
Better than throwing it in the trash, right? (Just make sure you pay cash, and don't use a card) :P |

PS3 Harddrive encryption prevents you from moving one HD to another system without restore the contents from a backup.
If your busted system can't backup its contents, you have effectively lost everything, Sorry.

Not a bad idea just remember they can prosecute for that.
Use cash and travel to a far away walmart, also remember that many employees in the returns department are now trained to match serials so have a gameplan. Preferably go when they are busy and be very chatty with the clerk to annoy them into wanting to rush you out of there.
I in no way condone this behavior and am simply giving information on a hypothetical situation.

If you have a Slim there's really no need to worry about getting it fixed, if you can get a new one for cheaper than they can fix it then go right ahead. It's the fat ones you want to consider sending in, especially if it's a 60g or 20g. |

Do you think they'd look at it really hard? I know the hdmi in is kind of wonky and bent up due to all the positions I've had it in. |
