TL;DR:
Proximity Explosives: Flux PE Plasma PE Scrambler PE (Temporal Grenade + Volt Driver @ 2:48)
Remote Explosives: Flux RE Plasma RE Scrambler RE
AV (Proximity) Explosives: AV-Frag PE AV-Flux PE AV-Plasma PE AV-Scrambler PE
Sticky (Remote) Explosives: Sticky-Frag RE Sticky-Flux RE Sticky-Plasma RE Sticky-Scrambler RE
Intro:
In order to understand the Scrambler explosives, please refer to KAGEHOSHI Horned Wolf's Temporal Grenade post and this video on the Volt Driver from Metroid Prime: Hunters.
Essentially what I'd like to do is expand the usefulness and depth of non-grenade explosives through various types of explosives. Proximity Explosives (PEs) and Remote Explosives (REs) would stay the same; racial explosives would be added. In addition, I'd like to see AV & Sticky variants/specializations to both the PEs and the REs.
Proximity Explosives:
The only ones we have now are the Minmatar explosives, so all the other races need to get some lovin', too.
Flux PEs would look like be shorter than the Minmatar PEs (Frag PEs), but be bulkier, looking similar to a stick of butter (the rectangular shape). They would essentialy be Flux grenades in PE form and would have damage scaled similar to that of the Minmatar PEs; of the PEs, they would have the second or third largest blast radius.
Plasma PEs would look like a bit wider and a bit thicker than the Minmatar PEs. They would do less instant damage than the Frag PEs and Flux PEs; they would also have the second smallest blast radius of the PEs. To compensate for their lower instant damage and blast radius, they would do burn damage after the PE detonates. The burn duration and strength would increase with higher tier explosives and would result in doing ultimately more damage than both the Frag and Flux PEs.
Scrambler PEs essentially a version of stun grenade. These PEs don't do damage, but they disrupt the functionality of PEs. These have the smallest blast radius of the PEs. The Scrambler PE would result in the victim's vehicle's being slowed for a short period of time and his/her vision being scrambled like from the Volt Driver in Metroid Prime: Hunters (link is a video).
Remote Explosives:
They would be the same as the current relationship between the Minmatar PEs and REs; their effects would be the same as listed for the PEs, except they would be manually detonated.
As a note, the Scrambler REs would also stop things like hacking, reloading, and zooming from occuring (maybe even temporarily remove the aim reticle?), but not shooting, crouching, and moving.
AV (Proximity) Explosives:
These would be similar to normal PEs where they must be activated by a vehicle, but instead of immediate activation, these PEs would work on a delayed timer (like 10-15 seconds?). The time delay would remain the same across all the tiers/variants, but the strength and number of deployable explosives would still change. In addition, like AV grenades, these Proxies would stick to the vehicle. Once they are stuck to the vehicle, they will appear on the crew's radar; they can be removed by through Fluxing and I guess by recalling the vehicle, too, or maybe even a newtype of module/equipment could evolve from this. ;)
Sticky (Remote) Explosives:
Same effects, but the strength and in some cases duration of the explosive would decrease; the time it takes for the explosive to be set (I think for the REs now it takes a second or two, so I'm thinking 3x as long) would also increase. However, these REs would be able to be stuck onto walls, ceilings, vehicles, and even other infantry.
Conclusion:
I'd definitely like to see some diversity in the explosives section of the game, and I think it'd be cool to see a Plasma and Scrambler grenade, too.

Any other thoughts? I think the AV & Sticky variants could be pretty interesting tactically. Also, the Plasmas would be awesome for area denial/suppression, and the Scramblers would be beast for ambushes/stealth. |

Flux PEs would actually be really useful... imagine: set up a group of Flux PEs before an LAV or HAV charges through a field of Frag PEs... if the thing is still alive, use a Scrambler explosive to buy time and finish it off with a Scout running over the tank, dropping a Plasma RE along the way, and murder the vehicle with molten molestation! |
