There have been previous threads about passive scanning. The point of interest to me, was whether or not range modules have stacking penalties or not.
The prior thread I found, had conflicting data. One person posted data that said no penalty, but another claimed there was.
So, here is another specific data point.
Skills: Gallente scout 3, range 3 Fit: 'neo' Scout gk.0. 4x ADV range enhancer
Passive scan picked up enemy at 38.mumble. faded out at 39ish.
So lets do some calculations. suit range bonus: 3x10% skill bonus: 3x10% Base without modules should be: 10m * 1.3 * 1.3 = 16.9m
module bonus: 35%
if module effects were "cumulative": that is, adding on to the TOTAL of everything else, INCLUDING other modules.... then it should be
16.9 *1.35 * 1.35 * 1.35 * 1.35 = 56m
it aint that for sure.
But what about if each module added a constant, calculated from (everything that isnt modules) ? One module should add on 16.9 * .35 = 5.915m range
SO, 16.9 + (4 * 5.915) = 40.5m Hmm. a bit high. But still pretty close to observed value. For reference sake, that would be a 140% bonus.
Using the stacking penalty calculator conveniently at http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Stacking_Penalties it says that the bonus will effectively be 132%
And that pretty much nails it. That comes out to a calculated range of 39.2 meters.
That... is Pretty Dang Sad really. it means that full proto skill, full range skill, plus 4stack proto range module, will only get you up to 64m passive scan, instead of a nice simple 99m scan.
Boooo.
One positive takeaway, is that I observed that up through 3 modules, the stacking effect is slightly BETTER than additive, according to the calculator.
instead of 35%, 70%, 105%, we get 35%, 76%, 115%
So that's interesting, at least. 3 modules of something are worthwhile, but 4, less so
at least we can see that the simpler method of calculating the module bonus independently of the others, gives us a fairly decent 'good enough' estimation of effects. And the fewer modules, the more accurate the results should be. ie: at 3 modules, it would have said 105%.

Mmm.. but is it worth filling up ALL four slots? particularly compared to the 3-slot config? in my book, no. I'd shove armor or something else in the 4th. 42m vs 48m? meh.
If it was 60 vs 99, thats something else.
Also, keep in mind that passive scanning is not as good as active
You get "360 degree scanning.... except for stuff behind certain objects, such as terrain", if I recall.
PS; waitaminit.. what skill levels are you using? 4xpro doesnt make sense. You'd have to have a minimum of scout 3, range 5. Going with those numbers: ...
That should come out to 19.5 + (19.5 *185%) = 55.5m in contrast to 3xPRO = 49m
Again.. "meh" for the 4th one, in my book. And even 2xPRO is 39m. Would prefer longer, but... would like more options to stay alive!
