I'm not new to FPS games at all, I have a lot of experience in CoD, Battlefield, and some other less well-known shooters. I am, however, new to the EVE universe.
After 1 match in DUST I was hooked...however, it feels like there is a rather steep learning curve. I decided to focus my first character on sniping because it allows me to hang back and get a feel for the game mechanics, and really get a feel for the game at my own pace.
After a week or so of play, I feel like I have a solid feel for the game controls and mechanics. Now I'm looking for tips from the pros on how to put the pieces together. What kind of 1-on-1 matchups are solid? What to avoid? Tactically speaking, which maps provide good vantage points for sniping? Does one game mode lend itself to it more than the others? Any tips the veterans have for a "blueberry" such as myself are greatly appreciated. |

Hey, welcome to New Eden!
Here are few things to get you started:
1. Before spending SP ask someone who's been here longer than 6 months. 2. Core skills are the best skills - passive bonus to eHP, speed, weapon proficiency, PG/CPU fitting will always be useful. 3. Don't rush into protosuits - work on modules so you can actually fit those suits properly later. 4. Play in a squad. 5. There are lots of starter corps that can show you the ropes. (Hellstorm's is Hell's Gate Inc.)
As far as being a sniper is concerned,
1. Learn to fly a dropship. 2. Spend time learning the maps and looking for cool new spots. 3. Damage tank your high slots (complex damage mods should be a high priority)

While i am not the most qualified to answer your questions i would direct you to the Fox guides. (Fox Gaden knows and compiles a lot of very useful info) I know many would disagree but all the maps a good for sniping, if you don't mind getting in deep and exploring the lay of the land. Some maps are however sniper havens.
My best piece of advice is watch your six as a sniper (i know this may seem silly but you would be amazed) I kill a lot of snipers as a scout, people don't watch their backs, don't move to new positions, and don't vary their routines become easy prey. The good places for snipers are not the obvious ones, and don't sit on a horizon line. I have had matches where i have just footed my way around the map wiping out the same guys in the same places for the entire match don't be that sniper
See you out there |

Assuming you eventually want to participate in planetary conquest... You are a long way out, simply put. Upgrade your core skills. Pick a weapon you like, then choose the suit that best compliments said weapon. You may want to consider giving up sniping unless that is your absolute true passion in this game. Unless you are top ~1%, you will not get into a PC match, at least for a good corp. if you do choose to continue sniping, domination is typically where most of the snipers go. One objective, everyone is practically all around it. Hard not to like it, if you're a sniper... or a logi ;)
Oh, and send an application to dust university. Squad up with people. Use a mic. The game is better talking and playing with people you know. Eventually, that's what keeps you around. |

welcome to new eden!
best tip I can give, get your core skills to 5 asap starting with shield and armor upgrades.
that's an extra 25% hp respectively for a total of 50% more base hp.
these core skills strengthen the base of every suit so your not using any suit to its full potential without them.
until you know what youre doing don't go buying the best gear you can fit just to lose it and end up isk negative. use your starter fits to garner revenue and tinker with them fitting various mods instead of paying for a whole suit to make your mistakes with. I recommend the starter medic suit as a go to, its the most versatile and you can earn a bit more WP more easily with the nanite injector |

Hi, my name is Charlotte O'Dell, and I represent The Learning Coalition. We are a non-profit group of very experienced players (at least Open Beta) who have decided that teaching newberries is more essential to making this game succeed than stomping them. Henceforth, the Learning Coalition was born. We are a coalition of 3 main groups: The Mango and Friends networking agency (runs financing, finds new players corps to suit their needs) and other logistical things for the LC), the Immortal Guides corp for new players to get a basic education in Dust, and Bojo's School of the Trades, which offers higher education to would-be specialists.
No matter what you're looking for the Learning Coalition can help you find it. No application necessary. Just join the chat room and introduce yourself. Someone will talk to you. |

Thanks for all the replies. As I log more and more hours on the game I'm beginning to feel most at home in a hybrid role...typically a commando suit with an assault rifle and sniper rifle. That allows me to have decent punch at short-to-medium range and still be able to reach out from a distance and knock out enemy snipers, while being able to survive 1-2 hit from an enemy sniper (unless they're using a proto weapon. It limits the equipment I can carry, though, so I'll probably get a logi suit once I grind out enough skill points.
The FoxGuides are very useful. Learning to fly a dropship is proving challenging.
Any and all tips are welcome. I'm determined to find my niche in this game! |

Welcome Thaane. Best advice I could give is keep on truckin'. This game will be extremely unpleasant at times, but patience is key. Get a mic (if you don't already have one) find a squad of peeps you enjoy bullsh*ting with, and be patient. Push through the tough times and just try and have fun.
Aside from that Rynoceros hit it right on the money. Core skills (Dropsuit Upgrades) are a must. They don't seem glamorous at first, but once you start skilling into them you become addicted.
I personally got my level 3 Minmatar Assault suit, got my AR Operation to level 5, along with 1 or 2 more skill points into some other AR stuff, and I've been in Core skills ever since. I was hesitant at first, but I am now a firm believer in training Core skills early. I'm personally not a fan of the Commando suit just for the simple fact it lacks space for modules, but go with whatever you get the most fun out of. There will be times when you forget having fun is the most important part of this (or any game). I forget all the time. Also, don't spread yourself tin early on. Find a role you enjoy and get that at least close to Proto so you always have a strong fall back.
Good luck, see you on the field. |
