A disclaimer: I will be just typing off the hook here, typing what my mind is trying to say, feel.
I am glad I finally got into this game. Just wish I had not started so late at the start of. the posts and info I have found so far on this forum as been great and awesome ppl.
I have been a gamer since my first PS1 (still have it). Always gravitated to shooter games, styles.
with Dust, I did the proverbial newberrie thing and created a character, spending my sp, isk, aum, etc. hapazardly on items, skills with now direction. Meh. I selfed face palmed. Had no direction, information, the tools to do what I wanted to do.
thanks to all here, know I do, and continuing doing so.
I have always gravitated to a stealth sniper, and that is my goal. Last few days I have been meat grinding, getting my sk up and lowering my learning curve. I have an upper hand for myself since in my other past games, I had always assumed a roll of a stealthy sniper.
So, what I am shooting for (no pun intended) and grinding for:
Gallente Scout (going lvl 3 this week... I hope) while in balance with maxing out the sniper skill tree (have lvl 1 in ammo / reload) maxing out dropsuit in electronics< dampners and scan (@lvl 1 ea.), and dabbing into engineering(?)
and I know in the future that I will go into sub machine gun for a side arm, but that will have to wait till my priority's are fulfilled.
Then, also considering a Gallentte Logi.... the two slots for a drop link and re ammo is most appealing.
Any tips, I would appreciate. I have been having a blast so far, great game.

Thanks X. It is a lot, but also necessary. I believe that I have read Fox's info a many times for far, and find needed little pieces of the puzzle here and there with every passing.
I will look into Immortal Guides. cyber boot camp can not be as bad as the real thing that went thru during my time of service ;) |

There is no shame in being new or seeking guidance. Recommendations:
1) Join in-game channel "Scouts United". Have a mic and com discipline. Tell the guys you're new. 2) Submit an application to the Scout Corp "R 0 N 1 N" ... seek out Kodho or Keeriam Miray. 3) Consult Scout Sniper vets here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=90055&find=unread

On another note, did not realize a weekly cap on skill points. Playing last night, and points where in the hundreds. I learn something new everyday. |

Come and join R 0 N 1 N. Spelled with a zero and a 1 with spaces between the letters. I'm not playing for the next couple of weeks because my ps3 is being repaired. However, Keeriam Miray and sniperassasin (spelling) is as good as they get in the sniper role.

Okay, I have a mission for you, newberrie, sir. It just so happens that one of the best snipers in the game uses a very similar fit to the one you are describing (GA scout with damage mods and dampeners, I think). His name is Grease Spillet. To find him, join Immortal Guides, then ask them to send you to the Learning Coalition chat channel. There, ask either Complex Doom 1995, Lillica, or Charlotte O'Dell to hook you up with Grease Spillet, as they're buddies, though really any of those three can guide you on basic fittings, but Grease is the man you want. FIND HIM and tell him that Charlotte O'Dell sent you. This is the great journey you must go on. 1) Immortal Guides 2) Learning Coalition 3) Grease Spillet 4) SUPREME KNOWLEDGE |

Don't go past lvl 3 as a Gal scout, as you'll lose a high slot, which you want to save for damage modifiers. Think of the type of sniper you want to be: close to the action, or stand back and have overview. As a sniper, I'd recommend the overview, because if you're closer than 100m, there's more effective weapons to skill into (scrambler rifle, and new rifles coming soon).
As you're away from the action, don't bother with passive scanning or dampeners. Get your electronics up so you can stack damage mods: you'll need all the alpha damage you can get. It makes a HUGE difference if you need 1 instead of 2 or 3 shots to make a kill. It will also save you a lot of ammo. Focus your skill on proficiency as well: it eliminates sway, increases damage and allows you to use proto rifles. You'll do up to 519 damage per shot.
Good luck! |

Thanks for the tips, wisdom IL. I primarily get out ahead, hack all I can, destroy up links that I find, deploy uplinks in hard areas. Then I assess my areas, lay back till the cav rolls in (up links) and support, see what they do not and kill.
I will have to invest into a sidearm, will go the SMG route.

Why in the world would you want to snipe in a damped scout suit?!
Do you like being counter-sniped in one shot?

That is a valid question.
All suits have there pros and cons. I like what the scout suit has to offer. I understand the scout suites limitations. Knowing that, I can develop my "role" to be diversified for the battles to come over time.
Being new to the game, and grinding for SP, I can only further my quest as fast as the game will allow me too.
So, I choose to be primarily a scout sniper. In my minds eye, I can do a lot with that, and benefit myself, team, squad, corp.
I am fully aware that I have a struggle ahead of me. I am okay with that. Scout sniper is what I have chosen. fits my own personal personality.
And, in due time, like other vets that I have come to know,
I will be a force to be reckoned with. All in good time.

So even though you've sitting still in full view of most of the map, you've decided that the suit with the lowest possible HP is the best choice for the role? Even with directional damage indicators? And sniper round tracers? I don't think you understand how easy it is to figure out where a sniper is sitting in this game. No matter how well damped you think you are, you will be found through the scope of any competent counter-sniper.
And this a suit that has the most difficulty stacking damage mods as well due to the number of available slots and low CPU/PG. So not only are you easier to counter-snipe, you deal less damage compared to a sniper in a medium suit.
I'm just surprised you went with the arguably most ill-suited suit for the role.
What is your reasoning behind choosing it? Is there something I'm missing about it? |

Not trying to insult you or anything, I'm just trying to understand why you think Gallente scout snipers is where it's at.
The perks of the scouts suit are high movement speed, low profile, and high detection abilities. The Gallente specifically also has the bonus to radar radius.
1. High movement speed would be good for getting into position at the beginning of the match, that's all. And even then all it saves you is a few seconds, compared to the medium suits.
2. Having a low profile is useless for a sniper because it only helps you with not popping up on someone else's radar. And as a sniper, you're too far out to be on anyone's personal radar. Maybe it helps with being scanned a bit, but that's it.
3. The high detection abilities and bigger radar radius do not even come into play because as a sniper, you're zoomed in at all times, not even looking at your radar.
So if the scout perks are mostly useless, what's the point of sniping in the scout suit? I'm super curious. I have a proto Cal Assault fitting with a charge sniper rifle, 2 damage mods, about 850 HP, a hive and a pistol, etc. If someone tries to OHK countersnipe me it won't work, unless they have a Thale with a bunch of damage mods, and manage to land a headshot. Compared to the complete glass cannons that scout snipers are, it surprises me how many new players keep popping up wanting to snipe in one.
Is it because CCP keeps trying to sell scouts as the sniper class?

I am not insulted at all, and very good, valid points, questions that you have addressed.
Speed. I like a very fast character.
Sniper. I like to do it, the roll of being. I am good at it.
I do not snipe all the time. I do scout stuff. I get in fast and quick and do what needs to be done. Only a LAV will get in quicker than me, or others like me. when I am in close, I can hack, drop links, sneak up, etc. with very little detection. when I am back, I can support and and instigate havoc with the sniper rifle.
close quarters, etc. I will use my SMG and grenades.
I am fully aware it is not perfect fit, and in time I can further exploit it even further as I progress in SP. I have to start somewhere.
Sure, I get hit. I get hit alot. But that is me being new to this game and figuring it out. As my skill progresses, points progress, I will be able to further diversify as a scout. Plenty of options.
CCP has, had nothing to do with it, or anything else, except for myslef. My own personal ambition. I have try'd the other suits. Not "my" style. And that is the great thing about this game. Not just one style. There is plenty of them. And with that, you can role into just about anything.
I do like to snipe. One bullet. One shot. One Head kill. For whom the bell tolls.
The ole saying, speed kills. and either I kill or get killed. |
