FULL of LAWLZ. FULL. I started an alt today, primarily for the purpose of playing with my friend who is very new to the game without having matchmaking pair us up with people that have 6+ million SP.
Long story short- with NO skills, in nothing but starter gear, I was out of the noob academy in two games. Both of which I would consider bad games, where I had little to no support from my team. Not a single person was in a squad. I still managed to rack up over 2500 points after TWO games. Keep in mint that I am at BEST, as I see it, an average player. I felt like I was in Proto gear the whole time. The noobs had no idea what was going on, and I ripped through them with absolute ease. Point being, I feel like two games for these guys, or even five, is simply too few. They are going to be tossed out into New Eden on their virtual arses with NO idea wtf is going on.
While this is pretty funny on certain levels, it probably isn't good for new player retention. Just my two cents.

Battle Academy is living proof tho that gear isn't everything. Skill does play a part in Dust, who would've thought it |

Yeah. I'm dealing with a pretty severe anxiety problem right now, and for the first time in my life. I've always been pretty laid back- I don't know how to handle this. I played a few games of DUST to get my mind off of my problems and relax, and then jumped on here to express my concern for an area of one of my all time favorite video games.
But hey, thanks for being a complete piece of sh-»t. |

I just started an alt too, to check out the new players tutorial, which I liked, and was kicked from academy after 3 matches in which I wasn't really trying at all. I found that knowing the map and how the weapons work by itself can help way more than having even a considerable amount of SP. Knowing where to position yourself and what to expect from each weapon/suit etc. is crucial, but the only way for new players to learn this is playing, and playing a good lot to get used to all the maps/sockets, plus reading/experimenting many weapons descriptions.
Real newbies take longer to get out of the Academy, they just walk around trying to figure out the commands and the map. It certainly won't be enough time for them to figure out all the maps and weapons and suits (lol, not even close), but that could take a lot of time and shouldn't be the scope of the academy.
Point is, what should be the objective of the academy? You can't hold their hands until they figure everything out, it takes a long time and active effort for a merc to get there. Currently it's just enough for you to get the hang of the game in the most general form and then get to the real game, matchmaking have mercy. I don't think the way it is right now is wrong, it is the right approach, but I will agree with IWS suggestion of adding a final requirement before kicking a player from academy, and then I'd say it's on spot (suggestion was, after reaching the required amount of SP you had to make at least x WP in a single match to get out, x being reasonable, like, 500? I'm not sure). |

The moral high ground option only works if you go there straight away, not after getting your panties in a twist and making the same insults you attempted to lambaste me for You would think some guys would have figured that out if they are as old as they try to present themselves |

While the current WP requirement for graduation is definitely to low, no amount of academy play will ever prepare a new player for facing vets. You could play in the academy for a month, and after that month, if you have done sh*tty you definitely aren't ready for vets. If you did awesome, it was against new players, and the tactics used by vets and vet squads will set you right back at square one.
Map knowledge is huge, and has absolutely no relation to WP. I'm around 3 months in right now and i'm still learning stuff about every single map. Decision making is pretty much just as important as raw skill in Dust, and there is really no way to obtain the knowledge you need to make sound decisions without putting in work and learning the hard way.
I feel for new players. I was in their shoes not very long ago and sh*t sucks if you are new. I joined up when the WP requirement for graduation was 400, so I was running with the big dogs after 40 minutes or so, maybe less maybe more. I didn't understand the whole Academy concept until days after beginning to play, so I was days removed from the academy when I realized I had been fighting vets.
I don't really know what the answer to the noob question is. The suggestions of tutorials and extended academy time doesn't solve anything, at least in my opinion. You just gotta play. You gotta win, you gotta lose, and you need to do this against the regular Dust population. The academy, in my mind, is there to get people to like the game enough to stay when they start getting @ss raped by the regular population.

Yeah, made an alt to play around with today to check out the tutorial stuff. Absolutely wrecked with the Plasma Cannon. it really wasn't fair. Quite a few triple LAV kills an just people sniping in the middle of the road. I felt dirty afterwards.... |
