It's not realistic that aarmor plates slow you down by a quarter but your acceleration is still the same as before.
In physics: a(cceleration)=F(orce)/m(ass)
The force the engine can bring is constant while the mass increases drastically so in fact the acceleration has to decrease drastically. Instead of reducing the speed by 25% for 180mm plates it should rather be a 10% reduction to speed and a 15% reduction to acceleration.

Some sort of acceleration hit might be necessary, after of course they make the penalty work in the first damn place. |

By physics it wouldn't lower speed at all, only acceleration. They are following "eve physics", this point has been brought up on the eve fourms too. EvE plates also add mass that affects turning and acceleration.
Top speed racers on dry lakes add weight for stability, it doesn't lower the top speed at all and they have miles to accelerate.
Increased weight lowers rocket speed since it lower acceleration and fuel burn time is limited, I am guessing they added the speed reduction to eve to mimic this without making people have limited fuel supply.
Same with a person, more weight lowers acceleration and the runner gets tired faster therfore a lower speed was reached. If a person could run a sprint at constant force for an hour they would reach the same drag limited speed if carring a backpack filled with lead or bubblewrap. They would take longer to reach the speed carring the lead. Real people would tire long before reaching the drag limited speed. (limiting speed could be limited by max speed of limbs instead of drag, hard to say since nobody is ever going to run that fast)
You could balance dust plates either way. Adding mass would make it more relistic but also complicated. I like the complication but not all do. It would also be an extra nerf to armour that is already weak compared to shields.
Once shield extenders get their draw back, if plates seem over powered adding mass would be a nice way to bring them back to balance. |

^ Shut up. It adds realism, it's not a nerf. Things are to be adjusted around realisticity as a base, not your fairy tale ideals where tanks ******* fly and have 15k armor. They need to be seated in realism. If this made tanks sitting ducks to be destroyed, then they would increase the health and balance it around the realism. Just shut the hell up. |

while we are arguing the logic behind vehicles explain how shield extenders are supposed to logically slow you down as right now fitting shield extenders effects your accel and turning abilities |

Another thing CCP mistakenly got confused with. First they made armor reps pulse every second and shield boosters pulse once every three seconds (but it should have been the opposite), they also made shield extenders have a speed penalty.
How hard was it to do a hotfix for this back in the day? Now they can't do that because of OP AV and nerfing armor reps now will kill off the armor tankers. |

I don't think vehicles need a nerf. The penalty if changed should effect both infantry and vehicle mods. I Think the plates should be left alone until the new vehicle balance and planned shield penalty is implemented. In the event shields are over penalized this would be a good way to bring the armour even to it. At the moment armour tanking need a little boost not a nerf. |

If you ever drove an armor tank you know f*cking slow they are and you wish to have more speed instead of acceleration. |

They have more than enough speed as is... I can't wait for the rebalance though. |

Glass tank Madrugars. If you put 2 180 mm plates on them they already have -43% speed which is about 60% of your topspeed. |
