Just for foreknowledge, this is my second character and I had to stop playing for awhile and built up sp that I spend all but about 1.2-1.5 mil of.
So I have finally done it. I have the Sp required to get the final level of Amarr assault. However it has occurred to me that I never got further than the first level of scrambler rifles and thus haven't gotten its proficiency. I was wondering if I should go into the rifles or go for the final levels of the suit.
Suit: Pro's: -I do sometimes over heat just a half-second before I think to stop and the suit skill would help with that. -would allow me to get the big purchase over with so i don't have to re-save all that sp.
Con's: -I refuse run proto on principle. (I will leave my rant out of this.) -will do less damage.
Rifle: Pro's: -I have enough to get to proficiency 3 and maybe 4, if I did my math right. -more damage -might learn to control my fire better so I will really notice the extra shots.
Con's: -have to save up all over again for the proto suit. -will likely continue to overheat more. -Psychologically harder as I will have to work hard for quite awhile for a measly 5% bonus.

if it's hanging over your head and taking some of the fun away then I'd say cut that **** loose and just get the proto suit done and over with.
but your refusal to run proto gear sort of defeats the whole purpose, pleeeenty of people run incredibly successful fits w std and adv suits loaded up with quality modules for the cheap especially if you've got your fitting skills well taken care of. Not to mention a beast of a weapon
I would stick around dropsuits III until fitting skills/modules are at least III-IV but that's just my personal opinion
Oh and related to actual OP, I maxed out a weap long before I was out of dropsuits lvl 1 so if it's the only weap you use then definitely beef it up before moving on to proto suits/dropsuits bonus V |

and considering max prof Assault Rifle is Gëê to a stock Duvolle, i'd say the weapon will be a better alternative even if i dont know anything about SR's |

Technically you should have gotten Proficiency 3 on your main weapon before leveling the suit up, but now that you are there, I would probably get the suit to 5 just for psychological reasons.
Saving the skill points to get a Suit to level 5 is soooo painful because you donGÇÖt feel like you are accomplishing anything, while saving up the same amount of skill points to get Scrambler Rifle to Proficiency 3 will not be nearly as painful, because you will get a sense of accomplishment every time you level Operations or Proficiency.
So, if you are cold and calculating and just want to get the biggest bang for your buck, level the Scrambler Rifle. But if you want to enjoy the leveling experience and save yourself the pain of the long SP grind, max out your suit. |

an advanced weapon is sort of necessary at all times. It's completely up to you how you play but if you lose more than one proto fit you're not gonna profit from the match.
a proto suit is really just a shell, unless you have your core stats to par and complex mods on it it's not really any better than ADV gear but like 3 times the price.
max pg/cpu to at least 4 shield 5 armor 5 weapon upgrades 3 or higher
weapon 3 -> proto suit -> weapon 5 -> prof 3 is how I do it. but get weapon 3 quickly. |

Running just a single Proto item (i.e just a suit, or just a weapon, or just a shield extender) you are risking a ton of ISk, and you aren't really set up to protect it. I currently have Proto-ed AR, Armor Plates, Shield Extenders, Shield Rechargers. I am only running advanced anything though, until I have a fully proto-ed suit. And remember, Proto equipment is not the end all be all. You want the passives to go with it, again to protect your investment.
I will say I do agree with Fox though. You are that close (on a fairly expensive skill) to level 5, go ahead and knock it out. I would avoid running any Proto for a while though.
Also, Core skills, Core skills, Core skills. I have my AR Operation at 5, and all other AR stuff at 2 right now (except for AR Fitting Optimization, which is 0). Nearly all the rest of my SP is in my Core Skills (Dropsuit Upgrades). I have become addicted to leveling my Core skills, and it has made a HUGE HUGE difference.
After you finish your suit, i'm telling you, Core skills Core skills Core skills. Just put your nose to the grindstone and knock them out one by one (obviously only level the ones you will use on your first/main fit/role. If you aren't planning on using Drop Uplinks for a while ((example)), leave them alone). If you do the math for the bonuses on say Armor Plates for example, level 5 Armor Upgrades and level 5 Armor Plates combine add a pretty decent bonus to your overall Armor. I'm currently away from the game, but I think Armor Upgrades add 5% to overall dropsuit armor hitpoints per level, and Armor Plates add 2% to overall armor plate hitpoints per level. An absolutely huge bonus, especially when the same is done to Shield Extenders.
If you don't run Armor Plates, the Armor Upgrades Skill is still huge because the bonus applies to your suit, not the Armor Plates themselves. The actual Armor Plate Skill will apply to the Plates themselves.
