Rating Scale
1 / 5 - Fails to Teach the player how play. 2 / 5 - Achieves Bare Minimum, Players resent having to go through the experience and would rather skip 3 / 5 - Achieves Tolerable Usage, Players would not mind going through the motions again. 4 / 5 - Good Solid Foundation but room for improvement. 5 / 5 - Improve only as necessary, the tutorial is near perfect for the average person3
Previous Rating 1.8 / 5 - Walls of Text, while informative enough are enough to scare most players away resulting in failing to teach players the ins and out of this game.
Current Rating
3.75 / 5 - Does the job leaps and bounds much better.
The Tutorial is Quick concise and to the point.
The closest this new tutorial gets to a wall of text is the short sweet and simple introduction at the start and the good luck message at the end each a paragraph long.
The new tips and suggested action windows are small unobtrusive and simple. I mean the only way to fail this portion is to not have the ability to read. This could be improved if there was iconography in the tips that correlate with neocom's iconography to make finding the desired options faster as well as to allow illiterates or non-localized customers the ability to pass the tutorial.
The tutorial has three phases so far.
First Phase - Battle Finder
This is nearly exactly the opposite of the last tutorial where it thrown wall after wall after wall of text at you.
While some veteran players are rather vehemence over the amount of WP/SP of the rookie academy. Those that get shooters will progress into the full game easily. There are those however still struggling to know which end of the gun to point at the enemy. I feel that this could be a phase 2 in the future and maybe some sort of test for those that get it to leave early. Such as scoring sufficient WP to leave the Rookie Academy after they achieve enough regular war points to qualify for the test. That way those who are sucking will remain in the Rookie Academy and those that are there to farm would be hard pressed to not own noobs much because they will trigger the sufficient WP required. Further enhancements to the WP reward system will be welcomed as well to make it even harder with wp rewards for things like Revenge, Guardian and the like. This phase can be better precursor and then augmented with a gun range or danger room in the future.
Second Phase - Skill training.
The instructions here is a bit vague and because the menu is so likely to be wandering prone. There is also no emphasis or idea that the skill books are acquired or not bought yet. While it stands to reason a grey book means not bought yet the thing is this is the first encounter with the skill book. A new player wouldn't know the difference between book covers. Also importance of skill training is a bit deemphasized from before. This could be visited elsewhere or in this phase or a new tool is needed to help soldiers properly plan their growth. Certification system would go a long ways as it pre cuts out skill training regimen. Overall its enough but there is more work here definitely needed.
Third Phase Fitting
Fitting I feel is the most incomplete of the three, the tooltips on the right side cycle this is bad and should be replaced by a quick picture over or step by step UI explanation or a new fitting screen altogether. Tool tips on the left are replaced by player action. The most lacking is modules which in itself could be an advanced fitting tutorial that needs to be generic enough to be future proofed such as fit a shield modules then explain what shields do and fit armor module ect ect. The most odd sticking out thing was the tutorial going over yellow boxes where there is none. As opposed to red and blue boxes but blues should be no more. The tutorial needs to go back and emphasize the Quantity the most however or players are going to start to find out the hard way. Also 1 shotgun and 1 caldari militia suit needs to go.
Rewards
Good step wished it contained things outside of just items at time.
Overall its getting to a good foundation point it is still missing a large number of items but this is the direction to go and should and must continue to go in this direction.
Tutorials I feel that are missing still

If CPP wants to get a larger crowd they need to attract more of the mainstream crowd or this will be forever a niche game.
I strongly disagree higher WP requirements to leave the Rookie Academy is the answer. As I stated before a qualification test is more suitable. |

What form of test are you talking about? Reading above you mentioned WP requirements, but isn't that basically the same thing as the current system?
Correct its making enough WP in a single match as the qualification to finally leave. 1k sounds okayish but may be too high for a new player, veteran players can easily get the 1k they need. |

The Eristic wrote:I created a new character specifically to test them out. They're effective, but actually manage to be overly concise (unlike most tutorials), and omit some really critical stuff like how to and why one should join a squad, what certain stats mean and their significance when making a fitting (particularly slots/modules), et cetera. Playing the Academy matches felt like playing a typical FPS with very short TTK, since it's entirely AR vs Militia fittings with no real HP. I can see how genuinely shocked players must be after coming out of the Academy and into the pubs, with no idea that their next match will be throwing their no HP up against 600, 800, 1200 HP builds or that those builds can even exist!
Its going to happen anyways though soon or later also there is the frustration level of being babied too long without ever being able to see the full game in effect. Making the babying period too long or something that feels unreachable is a very bad goal overall even if the real game is brutal as hell. |

Player retention is put to pieces with Pubstomps, as it really just makes the player annoyed. It I wanted to be annoyed, I'd go play super meat boy.
If I played DUST and hadn't be watching DUST since its announcement, I'd really would have quit.
But yeah, tutorials aren't the only fix for bad NPE, but from what I hear of it, this is a good start.
It would make a lot of things easier with teiricide. |

I'm not sure how explaining one of the most important concepts in the game is babying. I'm simply advocating the fitting tutorial explaining "Hey, these are high and low slots, these are modules that can go in them, this is what they will do, you'd best start using them as soon as possible, because in 1200WP..."
Well the average most other games do this is 2 minutes before throwing you to the wolves. |
