I am constantly reading posts about how vulnerable dropships are and I am amazed at the lack of info on good fits, so I thought I might try lending a hand and try to get the ball rolling. I try to fly every game I can and over time I have learnt a few valuable lessons. First off my goal as a DS pilot is to seek and destroy. I fly around the map hunting turrets, tanks and infantry, because of this I fly Gallente ADS. it's quick, nippy, is good at gaining altitude and with the right modules can take a beating. At first I though tanking the thing out was the best option but soon learned: doesn't matter how much armour of shield you have, if someone wants you down, your going down. Repos where my next priority, after skilling to level 3 I was still getting a battering and loosing a lot of ships. Next I discovered after burners and wow this made a huge difference, altitude became my best friend. This saw my mortality rate soar but I wasn't earning any WP because if they can't hit me I can't hit them. At this point I very nearly gave up and this would have been the end of dust for me but I persevered and I'm glad I did. My revelation came in the discovery of armour hardeners. I put these off for a long time as I had skilled into the shield hardeners and wasn't too impressed but armour hardeners are of a different league. They last a minuite and recharge in 15secs and the difference they make is incredible. Linked with a good repo they give you some thing most pilots dream off: the ability to identify targets using AVs and with some good shooting you stand a chance of not only surviving their onslaught but also the opportunity to blow that bastard up! Since using armour hardeners I finally smash AVs into the ground. The reason this works is simple: hardeners add resistance not physical shield meaning if activated simultaneously to a repo, damage recieved to armour can be almost fully rectified before the next round hits you. The use of afterburners to GTFO before its too late is essential as being out of range allows repos to regen and hardeners to cool down. Honestly this has changed the way I play and allowed me to achieve reasonable WPs most games. Don't get me wrong, this does not make you invincible but it allows you to stand off with infantry and get some good kills. One last thing, if I'm in a game and Im getting hammered I will land and recall ASAP. Far to often I see blueberries smash DS because they don't listen to the battlefield. It's not often I get blindsided and shot out the sky, most times I loose a DS its due to taking risks I knew I shouldn't. Anyway hope this helps some of you in you quest for aerial domination, good luck! |
