The menus in battle are bad. The first-person squad order menu is hidden from most players, and no instructions on how to open it. The vehicle and off-map support menu basically paralyzes your character. The item select system makes it hard to quickly select equipment since there is no quick-swap like with weapons. There is also no method of asking for ammo, repairs, or anything else without a mic; even with a mic, the other person maybe on a different channel.
I tried the BF4 beta a while ago, and it reminded of how bad Dust's in-battle menus are. The way they manage to squeeze and organize so many functions on the controller (switch firing modes, turn on/off laser, switch equipment, spot enemy, vocal calls) in a sensible way gave me an idea on how to fix it.
the menu on the right d-pad button should be a radial menu that you have to hold the button to keep open. You should also be able to move while using it (just like item wheel). More importantly, i needs to be expanded to include squad orders (select quad orders, and get a sub-menu listing specific squad orders), and some system of making your character say built-in vocal commands (like "i need ammo", "i need repairs", and "get out of the vehicle"). Regarding the vocal commands, they need to trigger minimap icons to show the location of the requester as well as what is being requested; the "I need ammo" thing for example should show a flashing icon with an ammo symbol.
Now about equipment, equipment need to have their own button to tap to cycle through them, and to hold to open a wheel to select them exclusively. Not sure which button it should be; perhaps the overview map button since the start button opens up the map as well with the Neocom, or perhaps the player-list since it can be accessed from the Neocom as well. |

No. This is dust not BF4. buttons are already so complicated, we don't need more button inputs. in order to access the d-pad i must take my thumb of the left- analog stick. defeating the purpose of orders while moving long story short, Just use mouse & keyboard |

I'd rather have automatic icons that pop up for ammo and repairs instead of having callouts.
Go take a look at resistance 2 co-op. There's a lot of things that players rely on, but they created the game in a way that makes it easy to understand for anyone.
As the medic, you can easily tell how much health a player has left (colored health bars), where players are at all times (name tags), and which direction players are in that need health (icons that stay on the edges of your screen with arrows)
As the spec ops, you don't see allies health bars so they don't clutter your screen. Instead you only see colored icons that represent how healthy a player is. However, you are responsible for ammo, and can tell where and when a player is low on ammo (icons just like the medic has), and if that player is low, or completely out of ammo for any weapon. You also can see enemy health bars from farther away as you are the long range specialist.
As a soldier, your screen isn't cluttered at all with these things, but instead your HUD focuses on the health bars of enemies close to you. You also have a clear indication of your shield level and how much ammo/health you have left as well.
As for switching equipment I never really found that hard to do in this game and I prefer it over the way that Resistance 2 did it (using the d-pad up and down to switch between grenade types/ammo/etc).
I think the main difference between the weapon wheel from resistance and the weapon wheel in dust is that you don't have to move the stick all the way to the edge to select something in resistance, whereas I feel like I have to do that in Dust. Quick switch is one of my favorite parts about this game. Being able to switch to an injector, revive, switch to nanohive, throw, switch to gun, reload, all while sprinting and dodging an enemy is super fun. |

Partially agree.
I personally like the radial wheel. Once you memorize where on the wheel your equipment is, it's easy to instantly grab any item.
I agree with you on the bit about seeing how much health allies have. Especially as a medic. I really think there should be an indicator of some sort when allies are low on health
I posted a request earlier asking for an indicator on allies who are -25% health or lower -25% total ammo or lower -under fire
As for calling for help without a mic. I think Dust should honestly steal BF3's feature of having a universal callout button. In BF you press select when aiming at a vehicle to request pickup, or a medic to request healing, or a support to request ammo. It actually works very well. |

I like the idea of taking the Commrose from Battlefield and putting vehicle selection, off-map support, and installations on a wheel; I hate how I have to be still to use those. |

I never understood why the vehicle/strike menu was designed in such a paralyzing way. |

Make requests like this: When you pull up the weapon wheel, add 2 options on the left, one as a squad marker, which will color you chevron yellow, and will place a yellow rally point to indicate you placed that. Also make an option for requests, one for ammo, and one for health. These will be seen by everyone as a simple double or even triple flash on their huds.(anyone with a nano, or repair tool for their respective Needs) it doesn't need to be as 'in your face' as medics, but should be visible nonetheless. People carrying HP recoverable hives will have the icons show up, and for those who would rather not 'hear' the requests of others, make a 'request icon visible?' Selection right above those.
Thought i'd thro in the factthat only heavy weapons show up on the left, whch may or may not be a issue. |

Even if the vehicle selection menus didn't paralyse me I'd spend most of the time standing still anyway, though. Selecting the right fit is crucial and I'd rather spend that extra moment standing still accidently pick the wrong fit and be forced to recall and respawn the right vehicle. I feel that there really isn't much of an easy solution to this.
Whoever mentioned the keyboard has a point. If they allow custom remapping keyboard users can easily cater towards their preferences whereas the controller is greatly limited. However there is the possibility of combining the keyboard and mouse; if possible I'd map the key to upward thrusters on my dropship to my space bar and leave the keyboard on the floor to use as a pedal/accelerator for ground vehicles. |
