So this idea for how PvE can not only give us all something else to do but can actually add to the "meta" of Dust struck me yesterday while commuting home. I have absolutely no faith in CCPs ability or interest in doing something like this anymore, but I am killing time before I teach my night class so I might as well throw it out there.
Step 1: Drone PvE
They've shown concept models for drones and showed them in their misleading trailers. So I figured drone PvE should go something like this. NPC corporation X has security drones haywire and hires mercs to wipe out drones etc. Players have X amount of clones to destroy X amount of drones or drone spawning thingies. If mercs are successful all who participated split an ISK payout if not then no ISK from the NPC corp. This game mode would be selectable all the time like Ambush, Skirmish, and domination PvP. Now the neat wrinkle would be if each drone destroyed dropped random weapon components or not so random components that the drone has weaponry wise as salvage.
What would these components do? Well you would need to collect a certain amount or set of components which can then be used to make officer weapons.
Step 2: Component transport (escort mission)
So a dedicated corp or perhaps a single player has collected all this drone salvage they can do one of two things. Either A. sell the components to other corps or individuals on an open market or B. transport the materials from storage to a manufacturing center on a planet.
This would be a selectable sort of battle kind of like old corp battles where a corporation or individual will have to post what time and the number of components being transported (something along those lines). When the time comes the team in question must escort a number of AI ground RDV vehicles to the manufacturing facility.
Now what can happen when a group is doing this is that another group can basically try and gank or blow up the convoy. To do this they should have to risk something so lets say the attackers would have to deploy a couple CRUs that each cost a certain amount of ISK and can deploy only a certain number of clones. Or maybe they have to pay to deploy an MCC with a set number of deployable clones.
If the escort team is successful they get officer weapons based on the number of components that survived transport plus the attackers MCC and/or CRUs. The ganking corp if successful can either A. destroy the transport vehicles simply preventing their rival from gaining better weaponry or hijack the shipment getting their stuff.
So I know we'll never see anything like this but I would love a Dust 514 where stuff like this can happen. With such a scenario you can have corps that specialize in doing PvE and get components to sell on an open market, corps that specialize in providing protective services for escort missions, and of course nasty evil raiding corps looking to gank stuff. Or any combination of the 3.
Well that killed the needed time, a dream I'll never see realized, have a good one mercs. |

Anything that can "save" Dust (as long as it doesn't touch my suit or gun) I'm fine with. |

Open all player controlled districts to drones. Let groups of players choose which planet to go to fight drones. There is no teams, only one large group and the drones are infesting the clone facilities. If the infestation gets too large and is not managed it would cause clone deaths and create drone spawns during PC matches.
Any group can get as many squads as they want to queue sync till the max number allowed is reached. They all deploy to a district and start farming drones. If there is only 24 mercs in a district ratting then there is still space for 12 more. Any random can come into the district with them and either help kill drones or fight the ratters.
This would create a place for players to make their own content and give districts more relevance. I understand that drones can't be everywhere but if we were to expand into the drone regions for PVE then the scene would be set. Any type of PVE is needed almost more than vehicles and suits. |

Honestly if they want to "save" dust and add more content they can easily add a few more game modes. We already have KOTH and a version of Control point. Just throw in progressive control point, payload escort, and ATK/DEF and it would add a ton of variety to the game without much changed. |

PVE can save Dust thread #3984829. Honestly though, IMO, PVE is not on the road map right now. I can be wrong but if you read that they're taking away vehicles and putting in new weapons, it doesn't sound remotely related to anything PVE. It sounds like they want the core worked on again, so no PVE. |

"PVE by mid-2013"
So saidith Brandon Laurino during fanfest 2012.
I feel a little a bit cynical and bitter about that to be perfectly honest. |

You are right they aren't working on PvE because they seem intent on making Dust 514 battlefield in space and I think that is a terrible mistake because they aren't going to be successful by trying to be like other PvP lobby shooter FPS games that are already out there and well established.
My half baked idea for PvE is about adding variety to gameplay

It sounds like they want the core worked on again, so no PVE. And that is exactly why dust is losing players. They're going to keep working on the core without adding anything and the game will constantly lose more players |

I really wish they would just drop it on us and not tell us. That would be fun. |
