The eve online character creator now works in firefox and chrome. and it runs even better than in eve online to be honest :P Anyways , users can use this tool to change avatars from a browser and update their forum portraits.
But here in Dust 514 we are but lowly 2d concept art. But I'm tech artist guy I can solve this... If CCP would just give me the tools I could do it myself for them.
You take the models being used in Dust 514, you create assets out of them for the eve online character creator. Easy, seriously...
Then with the same 4 helmets we see all the time, but now with a face inside and it's pose-able. This wouldn't have to be a feature for in game but just for the forums. Also maybe into the game for your little portrait. I mean we don't have to see the mercs face in the game... that would be a huge waste of resources...
Basically I'm hoping CCP see the crazy possibilities new browser tech is really giving us. Dust never needs a character creator, it doesn't need to show your face in game. It can just show your face in game when you press show info... That's it a simple streamed in texture created using tech that runs on the dust 514 website.
it's really cool how CCP already made it so you can create your dust character online. I think if you also gave people the step to create a custom face it will make them stick around longer. It worked in eve, and that means you don't have to do any work to bring it to dust.

But it's something the forum team could do, it wouldn't even need to be devs working on dust. They have a web team and as for putting those portraits in game I'm sure it would take months but it wouldn't be a huge thing to hold off on until later or a free dev from another studio could take 3 weeks to have them replace the ones in game.
I don't think it should be top priority, but it's a lot of work that's already done, the kind of stuff you get the interns to do.
I've been posting on them for over a decade and I like having my face :P |

To be fair they don't even need to import dust art into it at 1st. just give it us straight up as an option for our forum avatars. Lets us use the creator and import it as a forum avatar. It's the same forum architecture even! They could just treat this as the same as the eve forums and bam, work done. Create face.
