Hey mercenaries,
I've finally got enough skill points to start branching out into skills which I wouldn't consider as "core", and I have been considering the following 3 skills:
Precision enhancement - Bonus: 2% bonus to dropsuit scan precision per level Profile dampening - Bonus: 2% reduction to dropsuit scan profile per level Range amplification - Bonus: +10% to dropsuit scan range per level
Now I admit I don't fully understand the descriptions on each one so I'm looking for people to correct me or elaborate further on the advantage/disadvantage of each skills.
Precision enhancement - the way I understand this is that it will help you if you use a handheld scanner? I don't use this so in that case would this be even remotely useful?
Profile dampening - I understand this reduces your profile to handheld scanners, so I guess for me this would be useful as I mostly lone wolf it most of the time in an assault suit.
Range amplification - If i understand correctly, this is what my suit sees on the minimap? I do find this useful as I always have an eye on the minimap.
I'd love to hear your thoughts/analysis on any of these - keep in mind I do have the skill points to spare now so even if the benefit is marginal, I don't mind investing a few levels, but if the skill is totally useless I won't waste my time. I mostly lone wolf it in an assault suit and sometimes squad up if that helps.
Thanks to any and all.

Profile dampening will work against Active Scanners, although it may not be enough by itself to get you below an active scannerGÇÖs Precision threshold.
The other two only act to improve your passive scanning. I would say they are very useful if you run a Gallente Scout suit. Otherwise, it helps to see people sneaking up behind you when you are hacking or sniping, but probably not a really high priority.
Your passive scan range is 10m. Every point in Range amplification adds 1m, but at 5 that only gives you 15m. (Gallente Scouts have a suit bonus which gives rang as well, so combined they may add up to something sort of useful.)
Precision enhancement only effects what you can see with your passive scan, which is very near sighted.

These skills are mostly redundant for medium-heavy frames.
Precision enhancement effects your suit's passive scan precision. You would need to get your precision down to at least 45 to detect a Light Frame, because a Light Frame's profile is at 45 (but in practice we always lower it). It does not effect your active scanner. In my opinion it's probably the hardest skill to make use of. Most people are at extreme profile right now. Most mediums and heavy's don't bother with dampening so to detect them as a logi you would not need to bother with precision enhancement. However on the other hand you have almost all the scouts chilling somewhere around 30-20 Profile, which would require some serious module work to be able to passively scan them, and even then with the speed of scouts you would want a passive scan greater than 10 meters.
Profile Dampening helps you evade both active scanners and passive scanners. It's much easier to accomplish this on scout suits but with level 5 Profile dampening that's a -10% to your profile, lowering it to 45 from 50 (the standard medium profile). That's enough to get a medium frame undetected by the basic active scanner. However I've had more than one logi tell me that they profile dampen their logi suits. Profile Dampening is the best of the 3 in considering it's use across all suits and the need to avoid active scanners.
Range Amplification is really only pertinent to Gallente Scouts because innately they can achieve 22.5 Meters of passive scanning, allowing the modules to take it much further. However if you are a Logistics I would say go for it. Your Precision is 50 so you can pick up all medium/heavy frames without dampeners. With some sacrifice a passive scan logi is viable. My innate passive scan (gallente scout) is 20 meters ATM. If I throw an enhanced range amplifier on I can get a 28.4 Meter scan radius which is not half bad. A level 5 RA Logi with Complex amplifier could achieve a range of 23.25 meters. I believe with two you can get a really good range of 36 meters, but that's two module slots and some hefty CPU.
Summary: If you are a medium frame (most likely) I would say be one of the few, be a medium frame who has a working viable radar and a low profile. There are rumors of even some stealth-shotgun heavies. Your best bet though is to be a logistics player when dabbling with scanning things. The order that you should probably skill up is Profile Dampening - Range Amplification - Precision Enhancement

Great responses, thanks. It's true it had slipped my mind that profile dampening would also dampen my profile against "passive" scanners, which everyone has, so I guess it is quite useful since I have the skills to spare. Improving scan range is also a plus, and I guess precision comes last since it will have negligible affect unless I'm dabbling with modules. Still good skills to invest in considering they apply to all suits that I will (eventually) wear. Thanks again!! |
