I see from the new patch notes there are new tutorials included.. Now I'm making an assumption here that they are similar to the old ones where you get a voice in the background and a voiceover telling you to go here and whatnot..
Having read Templar one, I was thinking are there any plans to include actual combat/play style tutorials like the ones the Templar go through (well Vince in the book so I assume its same for all of them and other races will probably have similar things).
Actual Spawning in a training area in a militia suit and having the voiceover telling you to do things like how to sprint, change weapons and shoot popup targets etc. This would also get new players used to the controls and weapons behaviour in the game.
It could also allow you to sample the weapons available and learn how to deal with challenges in the game for example the popup targets teaches you how to use short-mid range then at the end of that firing range or obstacle run there is a supply depot that would allow you to suit up for the next challenge maybe killing vehicles etc?
Obviously this would take some designing so its probably not a priority at this time but would be nice (in my opinion) and I think it would be an introduction to being a merc/clone soldier.. It may also stop people thinking of themselves as a particular class of soldier i.e. I'm a sniper and show them how flexible you can be (no its not a stealth I hate snipers thread.... ok well maybe a little lol). |

They're giving you objectives to achieve for rewards, which I think could be notably useful. |

Yea its nice but way they put in the OP made it sound like you wouldn't have a list of things to show you what to do. But maybe in a future update they'll put this more favorable idea into realism. |

The things you are saying may be interesting for a newbie...
But the real problem I see is the matchmaking for new players.
I was curious so I tried it out... the experience of a new player. So I created a new account.
Went into the "academy battles"... unfortunately they were 1 vs 1 and up to 3 vs 2 Domination battles. Now try and understand how boring that would be to a new player... obviously as there wasn't much to do while I waited for the newbies to spawn and make their way back to "A", I would go around and blow up the installations, capture all other points.
Now this made me plenty of WP which of course, due to the low WP requirement to "graduate" from battle academy I was in with everyone else who already had some skill and using advanced gear in 3-4 games time.
So in the end... maybe a run through tutorial (ala MAG) would be better, but would have to cover all the actions. Weapons Suits Tools / Equipment Modules How shields work How armour work Installations Null Cannons Vehicles Squad Orders Squad Leading Oh and an important one... HOW TO JOIN A SQUAD OR MAKE YOUR OWN.... and tell them from the start the benifits of squad accumulated WP's. |

Hello fellow Kameira Lodger,
Back at Fan Fest 2013 CCP did say that they planned to introduce a tutorial mode where players where actually in control of their weapons and such and did some routine actions and such, pretty much as you explained. I see no reason to believe this has been scrapped, it's just taking a bit longer with all the other things CCP has had to do I imagine with the new direction and all. |

Yeah so when you first join the game you are in newbie mode (you can quit this if you want though and go in headlong into the rest of the game).
First up you'd get he voiceover bits like you do now teaching how to make squads, create fittings etc basically teaching you the basics and the intterface similar to now but maybe covering more subjects.
Then into the solo play like in my first post. When you've done this you are considered ready for the academy where you actually put it all into practise.
I've never played in academy but do they have individual stats to the rest of the game? if so this could be a good way for people to spot new players they want to recruit. |

I don't see why they don't let people out as early as they want while letting them use it as a place to learn for a more reasonable period of time.
Heck, you could let them pick from a list of objectives and determine if those were met after the game ends. Piece of cake and no heavy duty game play changes. Give them something the first time they achieve each objective and you've got a training mode for very little effort. |

What CCP is giving us in 1.5 is definitely not a walkthrough, and definitely not the comprehensive mandatory hands-on tutorial/weapons range we were looking for. That is what DUST needs and there is really no substitute. If CCP is serious about getting their player count up it needs to be a matter of when, not if, and also it 'twere best done quickly.
I'm not raging about what we're getting in 1.5 though, because it is a very efficient use of developer resources, and it will improve both the NPE and player retention. Next to core mechanics these are the top priority for DUST atm.
And i also think it's a worthwhile exercise - if CCP carefully measures results and solicits feedback(by solicit i mean coerce, extort and bpo bribe) from every unique player that goes through the new NPE, they will definitely pick up some valuable pointers for when the NPE walkthrough is done right.
That feedback will be particularly valuable because DUST is a big transition for a lot of the potential playerbase, so the tradition well-done FPS walkthrough won't give players what they need to thrive in New Eden.
EDIT: P.S.: There's so much to learn about New Eden that the final tutorial product Needs to be slickly interfaced and modular. |

I think MAG did perfectly on their tuturial. You even got one time bonus exp. Maybe CCP could do something like that? |
