#1 Have a great product
#2 Invest in your product by marketing with ads, gimmicks, SWAG, and anything.
A company with a pretty popular game netting 1 Billion $ in 3 days spent $150 million in marketing...while only spending $115 million on the actual game. That's marketing with belief your product has the value.
Gimmick...In the month of October $100,000 dollars given away every week. The game is fun and has potential. Let the internet and news run the story of the giveaway. Players will come...will they stay is up to your game. |

CCP has a very different approach and they're making a very different kind of game. They're handcuffed to the PS3 for some undisclosed period of time and were probably forced to release earlier than they would've wanted. When the core gameplay is finished (all racial suits, rifles and vehicles) and possibly after they port to the PS4 and/or PC I think we'll see a much larger marketing push. In the meantime, they will try to push out fixes, features and content as quickly as they can given their limited resources. They're relying on the addictive nature of their skill system to keep existing players pushing forward and providing feedback, and will hopefully gain a lot of long-term loyalty from players accruing passive SP. The nature of the passive skill system allows for players to play other games, but keep coming back to try out new content and to spend the SP they've been accruing in the meantime. It's a clever strategy to bootstrap development. |

marketing 101
Base your marketing on a yearly cycle.
And base your spend money on next months projects not last months Numbers

Has Dust made an appearance beside PSN and expos? I understand the differences...only PS3...only PSN users...so the market is smaller. The budget is smaller, yes. But my point is marketing is huge.(sometimes) Has CCP really pushed the market yet? or are they waiting. Word of mouth and internet can be big and free but...(need solid product) the game has evolved much since everyone I told to try it did...and left. Run a gimmick and bring back players. |

They are waiting until they have more content before they advertise. No point bringing a mass of people in, if there is not enough content to hold their interest. Right now we are just Bata testers, even if the game has been officially released. But 1.4 gave us a fair bit of content. A few more patches like that and they may be ready to run those TV ads they made. |

Promotions are only one part of Marketing.
Marketing also covers Price - What are you charging for your product Place - Where is your product sold People - Your customers, vendors and competitors
That being said, CCP needs a new EVP or even CMO when it comes to Dust. I have yet to see how they are gaining any type of understanding about who their customers are and what their utility factors are with this game. We can easily see the size of their active customer base (regardless of paying) with Eve Offline but I would love to see some numbers as to the average monthly spend by customers over time since the start of Uprising. That or a simple CLV (Customer Lifetime Value) sheet showing a couple metrics.
So far, the only marketing strategy I have seen from the execs at CCP has been: Bury head in sand and repeat the phrase "it can only get better" |

if this game does not port onto PS4 in 2014, it doesn't much mater what is done, Dust will fade in memory like the PS3.
In my humble opinion, the only way dust survives is on the PS4, they have 15 months, crack that whip.
