With all the issues that came about with Uprising 1.0, plans had to be changed as to what was going to be the primary focus of the DEV team. Instead of building the game out and adding new content, they had to focus on core mechanics, balancing and server stability.
With that being said, it would be nice if the marketing/pr department would (at some point this year) give us an updated 'vision' of what to expect in the months ahead between now and the next Fanfest. There would be no hard dates to it but rather a short (< 3 months) and long (by April 2014) vision of where this game is going.
Many of the people who are veterans that still play this game are doing so in hopes that it will get more interesting and build upon the 'core' fixes that the DEV team are doing now. I think they deserve to get at least a glimpse about the direction that CCP is trying to take this game in to give them some hope and a reason to continue the grind. Personally, I have a buffer of 4 million SP saved up so that I can spec into something in the future that really draws my attention (was hoping for jets but that doesnt seem to be happening anytime in the near future). The moment I spend that SP on something thats just available is the moment I know my time in DUST is limited because it means I have given up on the future of the game.
All we get right now is snippets of imformation that usualy pertain to the very near future such as the next patch or so. Rarely do we get to see what this is all building towards. |

As far as what I think is going on, the DEVs are, like you said, focusing on the core aspects of the game. Balance, aiming, performance, all these things have to be fine tuned before they can start releasing more content. Problem is, the PS3 is so limited in its memory capabilities that I'm thinking most of the major content won't start coming until the transition to the PS4 is made (whenever that is).
The DEVs already stated that DUST is most likely going to outlive the PS3 so as far as the transition it's just a matter of time. Not everyone is getting a PS4 day 1 so I'm assuming it won't be till ~2014 that DUST comes to the PS4. Following that, I think DEVs will have a MUCH easier time as far as technical limitations because of the vastly improved architecture. From what I've read, and I'll spare you the intricate details, the PS4 is GDDR5 memory architecture which is capable of 48 GBps per module. The PS4 has 4 split modules which gives a theoretical output of 176 GBps Read AND Write.
Now compare that to the PS3's split memory layout (Cell processor and RSX GDD3-based GPU) which gives a read between 17-25 GBps for the Cell and 11-16 GBps for the RSX GPU as far as memory bandwidth goes.
176 GBps memory bandwidth vs (17-25 GBps x 11-16 GBps). That's HUGE. Also consider that the PS4 is going to have 8GB of GDDR5 memory available to both the GPU and CPU. That means there's 32x more memory for the GPU and 32x more memory for the CPU. Pretty massive jump...
So what this means is that the PS4 is going to be capable of some pretty astounding performance and won't limit developers nearly as much as the PS3 did. We all have heard CCP talk about "staying within the memory budget" and not being able to do X or Y because of "technical limitations". Sony really went all out on their design architecture this time around to not have the same problems we face with the PS3 with the whole limited memory and bandwidth. That's honestly probably why a lot of people are having issues with frame rate and such. With the PS4 we'd be able to have Crysis-level graphics while doing 32v32 no problem, assuming engine and coding are all running in tune.
All in all, it's honestly just a waiting game at this point. CCP is going to strive to get the core gameplay and fix all their backend code before moving on to the really big things with the PS4. This is all just my theory, of course, so take it with a grain of salt. |

It definitely makes sense and, if CCP released a little information about it, I would be fine. Granted, they probably wont put a shelf life on the PS3 version publicly because it could raise some issues with the playerbase.
Given that they are working on some sort of memory pool for what they can do, it would still be nice to know what their vision is with what they can do. Many have speculated that the reason the game was launched when it was is that it allowed CCP to start ticking down its PS3 exclusivity as soon as possible. IF (and this is a big IF) that is true then it would slate a PS4 launch in 2014 sometime after Fanfest. That would give them plenty of time to see how many adopters the PS4 has before making the switch. The bad news is that it puts them in direct competition with The Division and Destiny which are two of the big games I am looking forward to.
We could go all conspiracy theory here and state that the reason that CCP has only used grassroots marketing to promote the game so far is that the PS3 version is simply a rolling testbed to gain player feedback on map design, weapons and play style until they can port to the PS4. While it would suck for us to be the long term guinea pigs here, it would mean that they have a ton of information on how to build it out for the better system. |
