"release" and "beta" are just words, nothing more.
But there is a reason why people play with them so much. "Release" is an excuse to get some free promotion and temporarily spike player base. "beta" is an excuse to have poor polish and bugs.
I think CCP needs to bite the bullet and re-declare Dust 514 as "beta". Admit the release and consequent patches were a failure, and re-group.
Flying under the banner of Beta, Dust would feel more free to crank out content faster, at the expense of a few bugs and unbalance issues. This is good. It gets us to where we need to be faster. Balancing around a product with 15% content has shown itself to be a cyclical nightmare of 1 step forward, 3 steps back and and close to zero overall progress.
At this pace 2 years from now Dust will still not see the completion of even the racial variants for Existing suits, far less many new ones.
Sure the forge gun is broken, screw it. ARs, LRs, DS, Tanks, MDs, Flay Locks of the past, screw em.
OP weapons of the future, screw it who cares!
If this game is going to be terrible along the way, at least let it be getting somewhere.
What's worse, a little shame now, or a dead game in a couple years?
1. Publicly admit defeat. 2. Quickly decide the time-line of Dust PS3/PS4, how to make the switch, or find a way to work concurrently on both. Plan is to wait for new Unreal Engine? 3. Restructure and reorganize- all men on deck to content, ignore balance. Deal with it when you have the whole picture so as to not waste another 3 years. 4. Promise players a respec system with changes which terminates once all major content is finalized: All skills, weapon variants, racial suit variants, racial vehicle variants, all class of vehicles (LAV, MAV, HAV, light, medium, heavy aircraft, bikes) are IN. AKA "Release 2.0". 5. Take the opportunity to expand the ambition of Dust. You've been increasingly less ambitious as times goes on, resigning yourselves to the short comings of Unreal + PS3 + artificial-premature "release". 6. Do what you actually want with this game, be free of forum QQing about bugs and balance. Be free of these chains holding you on < last gen hardware. Unleash the potential of an FPS that has more meaningful implications than KD/R. Be free.

Hey, if you are willing to play with the FOTM I think the game is probably pretty decent in terms of action. It's not difficult to run around the maps, hack objectives and so on.
We may not like the balance or how some folks play but for the most part I have to admit things work (if not always the way we want them to). |

Why should they? Other F2P games do the same. Have you taken a look at Planetside 2 or Mechwarrior Online for example? Far from finished. Games like these live from adding new content over time. And I don't see how you think that we won't have all racial suits in 2 years. I mean the new weapons are already close to release. Sure, they got pushed back for another month. But trust me: Some day you wake up and suddenly CCP introduces the missing racial suits. |

They allowed AUR sales during beta. They'd still be live just as now or before. I have a better chance of waking up dead before waking up surprised that some new weapons got into dust out of nowhere.
Games like those live from adding new content over time, yes. That's what I'm saying they should do. Instead of what they are doing

More of a good thing?
The fact is that the game has reached a pretty solid state. It's a simple lobby shooter with greatly complex playstyles. And more content and customization options are coming with each monthly point release (development on Dust is now outpacing EVE Online).

Stop thinking of DUST 514 as a simple first-person shooter. It's a MMORPG at its core, and that implies continued development. If you define release as "when they've finished developing the game", DUST 514 will be in beta forever.
Was the game feature-complete when it launched? Not even close. But it had to launch sometime. Don't like it? Ask for a refund. Oh, waitGǪ it's free. HTFU. |

the problem is ccp promissed that all arum would be refunded back to our characters wallets at the end of each beta stage so after a while people were just able to reuse old arum rather than needing to buy new arum. as a small game developer ccp probably has to answer to investors who are looking at the situation from a buisness standpoint rather than a development one and as a result probably would have preassured ccp to "release" if for no other reason then to remove the arum refund obligation.
also look to the fact that they have not really dont any advertising for dust or made any real atempt to generate hype outside of the eve community. i think they are waiting to properly release ( as in make dust fully known to the gaming community, adds etc.) untill they are happy with where it is and then properly show it off to thw world, and in my opinion that s whats best as most people if they picked up the game now would form an opinion of it as buggy and a bad game and might not give it a try down the road once its properly done. |
