When tacnet shared intel it wasnt such an issue. But now i have been looking at dropsuits passive scanning and i never realized how low it is. No wonder i never seem to detect the enemy before i can see them. The suit i use has a base of 10 meters very short range in this game. If i skill into getting the range up i can max out at level 5 to get my passive scanning range out to 15 meters. Good lord thats nothing that should cost me maybe 50 sp's for that kind of range. Maybe its just because i play a heavy but man if that is another area that heavys get kneecapped give it up ccp heavys dont exactly own the battlefield with how powerful and long range ar's are. |

Trolo, you're a heavy. You're supposed to be blind and sensorless, that's the price you pay for innate tank and the ability to wield a FG. Get a squad member with an active scanner and all your woes are over. |

heavys are not really tanks on the bf any more. Not sure when the last time was that you played but even a militia AR at 40 meters can make very short work of a heavy. |

I mean relative tank. While that AR may make short work of you, it makes much shorter work of most other frames. What takes most medium frames (not logis) all their slots to achieve is about the base HP of a heavy. Take a STD heavy and slap an AR on it, and you'll steamroll kids all day. The HMG is bad but that's a story for another thread. |

The sad part is a scout is as blind as a heavy and therefore a heavy can sneak up to you as good as a scout up to a ditance of 10 m (unless active scanners come into play) |

So most drop suits have a 10 meter base range? so even if you max out the skill you can get a whopping 5 meter increase on your passive scan. I am betting this is simply an oversight on ccp's part. They couldn't possibly have intentionally made every drop suit have the same passive scanning range. To me it would make sense that scouts especially have a better default passive scan. |

We must be doing something differently, because as a scout my passive scanning is working really well for me, and I have not maxed it all out yet. |

You need to do some more research on the matter. Or you can read this...
Passive Scanning: The Test Results https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=110984&find=unread
The only ready your passive scan range is so limited is because you're in a heavy suit. Heavies are not intended to be used as an all-seeing-eye class. That job is reserved strictly for the scouts.
The Gallente Scout GK.0 (prototype) suit can be fitted with up to four complex range amplifiers. Combine that with the suit's racial bonus of 10% scan range per level, and the range amplification skill book bonus of 10% per level, you end up with a suit that can see up to at least 99 meters all around you. You will essentially have a very powerful passive scanner built into your suit which will practically negate the need for any active scanner. The only downside is that your squad won't see what you see because shared vision no longer exists. If you want your squad to see what you see, the active scanner is always available.
Please note that this is without stacking penalties applied. Since none of the range amplifier mods have any stated penalties in the description, I'm going to assume they don't have any penalties when stacked. If they do, then the max range when fully trained and fitted would be about 60+ meters. Even then, 60 meters is very far to see. Hell, I can see up to 20 meters with my alt specializing into this and already I'm seeing a big difference.
EDIT:
It appears to me (from experience) that it doesn't matter how much material stands between you and the enemy being passively scanned. As long as they are within range of your suit's scan radius, they will show up. |

They must also be stacking exponentially to get those kinds of numbers. If everything was applied only to the base number you would have about 20meter range. |

Granted you could literally sidestep every enemy besides snipers, you are paying the price. The only good you could probably do with such a suit is be the Backwater Objective Hacker.
It's cool in theory but I would be sufficiently surprised if someone could take into combat effectively. But it must be done regardless..... |
