So over the weekend, I decided to try being a scout to see what all the fuss (or lack thereof) was about. Granted, it was just a standard level Gallente scout suit, so I really didn't have much room to fit, but I managed. I used an standard level scanner, a standard shotgun, toxin SMG. So, all standard gear (so it was REALLY cheap sp-wise to try it out). And oh boy. It was epic.
First, I realized that my base scout suit's signature (I'm not sure of the Dust term, but the size of my suit as relative to other suit's scan resolutions (scan precision?)) is smaller at 45dB than their base scan at 50dB. That, combined with a profile dampener in one of the low slots (with a kincat in the other) made it so that I could get right up on some unsuspecting victim without me even showing up on their map. That made for the lols.
Next, I realized that I had to be smart about picking my engagements. I couldn't go running toward someone or even strafe toward them, since my tank is practically nonexistant and is mainly comprised of stealth. The plan was this: use the scanner to locate single or perhaps two victims. Make sure they were facing away (using the scan intel) from me or at least in a direction where I could sneak around the back of them. As soon as I had the intel on them, and knew they wouldn't see me coming without a scanner, BOOM! Surprise! Pew Pew. Dead. Then RUN!!!
Like the Batman, I'd flee into the night. All that was left was to rinse and repeat. Scan. Locate Victim. Sneak around. BOOM! Surprise! Pew Pew. Dead. RUN!!! The best part is when their friend would come over to investigate the ruckus--or better yet, they'd spawn and come looking for me--all I had to do was: Scan. Locate Victim. Sneak around...well, you've caught on by now.
It was a TON of fun, cheap to skill into, and a new way to play from the "standard" run-in-shooting-and-not-die. The goal was not to get shot. Hell, the goal was not even to be seen at all...like the Batman. |

I've been doing the exact same thing with nova knives.
Not exactly viable (without maxing it), but fairly fun. |

I've been doing this for about 2 weeks now myself. Surprisingly, one of the best game modes for this is Domination. One on match, I found 4 snipers in the redline deployed scant meters apart. None saw me. I started with the furthest back, and killed all 4 with 4 blasts from the shotgun and still managed to get back out of the redline. Epic.
By the way - I've learned that the profile dampener isn't really needed unless you are encountering someone with more than the basic scanner. I put on an armor repairer for emergency health regen instead of the dampener once I realized this. |

Skill up Dropsuit Electronics far enough to unlock Profile Dampening.
The passive acts as a free profile dampener module and frees your slots up for a repper (surprisingly useful).
I've been doing basically this approach to Scout since... Precursor, I think? Except back then we had passive scanners that were good enough to leave us with Equipment slots free. And no Active Scanners that worked anyway. |

Well done. It's hard to make scouts combat viable in 1.4. |

I try to pick on the unsuspecting or weak. So far, so good. Being sneaky can be pretty entertaining. |
