A friend of mine and I were talking about active infantry modules (in light of the active modules planned for vehicles in Uprising 1.5). We were discussing the possibility of a temporary invisibility module (Seeing as that is/was available in EVE). My friend says that the old EVE cloaker would make you invisible to essentially all but infrared, where you were the brightest object in the sky because of the heat generated.
We were thinking that something like that should be limited to a scout dropsuit, is limited to a 10-15 second duration, and completely disables shields after use. Also keep it limited to movement, so the module is deactivated by shooting or setting down equipment. We had tossed around some other ideas for tradeoffs, but nothing else really stuck.
What do you guys think? |

Just a quick take on what I would think of as acceptable for cloaks in Dust. I know not everyone will agree.
1. Complete invisibility.
2. No firing or target locking under cloak.
3. No sprinting under cloak.
4. No equipment use/interaction under cloak.
5. No vehicle usage under cloak.
6. No shields while cloaked.
7. Thirty second cool down when cloak drops/fails. Shields recharge as normal from drained state.
8. Any active battlefield asset such as resupply depots, vehicles, mercs, installations, coming within two meters causes cloak to fail.
9. Eight second system recalibration after cloak drops/fails. This means cloak penalties persist for eight seconds after cloak turns off. Exception: Sprint and melee immediately available after cloak drops/fails.
Proto Covert Ops Cloak variant only usable by scout suits. As above but with following changes.
3. Not applicable.
7. Ten second cool down when cloak drops/fails. Shields recharge as normal from drained state.
9. Four second system recalibration after cloak drops/fails. This means cloak penalties persist for four seconds after cloak turns off. Exception: Sprint and melee immediately available after cloak drops/fails.
Note that both number nines are under the idea that there will be a cloaking skill that drops the penalty by one second per level. Yes I know that would eliminate (9.) for scouts using cov ops with max skill. |

There's a Dev Blog that mentions cloaking here: http://dust514.com/news/blog/2013/03/equipment-is-your-friend/
The whole thing is worth a read, but here's the relevant paragraph:
Quote: The second item is a Cloaking Field. This sneaky bit of kit will not only make you (almost) invisible to other combatants, it will also blind turret AI targeting systems. It isnGÇÖt perfect invisibility, scanners will still pick you up if you havenGÇÖt masked your signal well enough, motion will disrupt the field to some extent and weapon fire will cause the field to shut down. This means it will take some skill to use to its maximum potential. This item is going to be a real game changer, particularly for Scout dropsuits which have been screaming out for stealth gear. |

To be honest, I'm not much of a sniper myself, I just thought it would be cool. If done right, it will have the right kinds of tradeoffs, balancing it out. The module that has been described is essentially only cloaks for movement, so as soon as someone tries to kill someone else, that's the end of the cloak. |

Very much looking forward to this, Scouts need some love.

PS@thread ~ Before it comes up yes I have a scout spec'ed toon, no it's not my main, my main is the Logi who's likely to get ganked by these scouts but hey "what makes me win" =/= "what's best for the game" sometimes they line up, sometimes they don't and it's important to keep track of which is which. |
