Even though very rare, sometimes I realize I'm lagging. This happened to me 2 or maybe 3 times playing DUST... yeah, not that much, but when it kicks in, it's definitely noticeable.
My connection is ok, but I know people with better internet (I'm EU, but I have friends from US with 30 or more MB download, which is simply not available in my country) still having lag issues, sometimes.
It happened to me today and, unlike the previous time, it was so bad I had to leave mid-game, because my shots were no longer registering. After unloading a whole SMG clip into a guy without damaging him, I noticed a funny thing: Not only my Scrambler was not doing damage, but somehow most of the shots were not causing overheat, so I could tap fast and shoot freely without making it explode in my face...
Scrambler Rifle Operation Level 80? Not really, just lag...
I actually like the fact that, unlike many other games, DUST will not attempt to balance the time to kill for everyone in the match giving a terribly unfair advantage to players with poor connections. It is your personal responsability to have a decent and working connection and you should not ruin the other player's experience. In particular, based on the games I've played, Uncharted 3 gives you a huge advantage if you lag. From the enemy's perspective, it seems like you're melee'ing from 25 meters away, killing in 0.5 seconds (it's a high-health shooter), teleporting, your grenades have a 100m radius and you simply won't die, or die a couple years after you get the required amount of bullets to die (you can still run around and kill people in the meantime). Yeah, it's pretty bad and that kills the competitive side of the game when the Lag is too much. It's still a great game though and you can download the Multiplayer to give it a try, since it's free to play.

lol, this gives you an idea...
Instead, in DUST if you lag you're gonna have a hard time.
That said, how much does it happen to you to lag? And if it happens, which precautions to avoid lagging (other than having a solid connection, of course) do you take? I saw a DEV thread to perform Port Forwarding to DUST, I wonder if that can improve the gameplay smoothness as well. And what about possible solutions (whene the problem is there already)? Of course, the first thing I'm going to do is to restart everything and fully power up, before logging back in. Are there other possible moves to improve your connection momentarily when you're getting some lag? |
