This only occurs while perched in VERY high places, looking down at outposts, platforms, and flat surfaces ("Biomass" and Ashlands are exempt from this bug). I'm only able to see their chevron, health (sometimes), and the red dot. Only when the enemy goes outside to move around the natural terrain will he/she render. |

Actually...I've been experiencing this and another issue as well. From distance, but within range I can see the target clearly, I've got a clean headshot (on a stationary sniper usually) reading 175% damage. Yet when I fire I see a hit marked but they take no damage. Moving my position does nothing, I put multiple shots into a target I can plainly see in my scope with no result. They are usually sitting out in the open when this happens. |

This has been going on forever. I'm pretty sure CCP knows about it but hasn't managed to come up with a solution. It's a matter of memory issues with rendering or something. |

This is not the Draw Distance Cut Off issue.
This is not knowing how to resolve distances when they are on different planes.
Your Sniper is up high and when on the same plane when the target is within your draw distance you will see them. Be glad you aren't tanking! They get cut off much earlier than Snipers.
However, what you describe is different. Picture a cylinder centered around your Sniper. It might be 50m thick (undocumented so this is only an example) and everything within that circle is available to be rendered. Your Field of View (FOV) drops the area dramatically. Then they cut off the Draw Distance to promote the use of the Scanner and to save Graphics load for drawing pretty, pretty grass that is irritating, breaks immersion and is known as texture pop-in (a bad thing in every game except DUST).
Now picture a similar cylinder centered on your target. If the distance between the two is greater than my example distance of 50m your target will get dropped from the object list.
The 50m is probably off, my experience is that it is closer to 25 meters as much past 50m difference will make Null Cannons disappear in a Tank, even ones that are only 240m distant. Which is normally displayed as that cut off is around 300+ meters regardless of the Rail Gun having a 599m range.
The only thing that resolves the two issues is this. They don't know how, or haven't bother to implement resolving when you can see the lower cylinder and that you might want to shoot at that Red down there.
The other is that the Scanner is more important than actually being able to see anything.
Seeing is free, Scanning cost SP and ISK. DUST is F2P, which do you think CCP/Shanghai prefers? |

Again today clear shots on targets, 175% dmg, red reticule, clearly NOT behind anything and I could not touch them. I was not far above or below the targets, basically all on mountain tops.
Here's the funny part. They had no trouble hitting me, naturally.
Also, I noticed that targets drop suits were rendering while they were behind walls, etc. no chevron, but clearly visible dropsuit .
CCP hates snipers now? |
