Its been a trend that many times I see people in threads requesting PvE or looking at it like it will be the savior of DUST.
However if we truly look at the situation I believe that it would be a mistake to focus on getting PvE out on DUST if the devs were to listen to the players. The main issue I have with it is the fact that I never really looked at DUST as the experience where I get to shoot AI drones in a Horde Mode clone. There are plenty of other games that do this.
What DUST 514 promised was a huge universe filled with player created content, the sandbox of New Eden translated into a shooter. Sadly this vision has not really been fulfilled by DUST in its current state and likely will not be for quite some time.
Many people see this and say, "Oh, just add PvE, it will be entertaining until we can get new content and new players will stay, yada yada yada."
I see that as a false hope in all honesty. At this moment DUST has been playable by the public for almost a year and 3 months. It has been in full release 3 months. We still do not have many of the basic features and promises shown at the earliest unveilings of DUST, things including;
- all racial suits, vehicles, and weapons - a variety of game modes - 48 player battles - COMMANDER/MCC mode (HUGE) - player market - EVE/DUST interaction (not entirely true but still very limited)
and I could go on and on but you get the point.
I will admit, I am very disappointed by DUST and do not really find it enjoyable. I honestly have not played it regularly for quite some time now. I know of many others who feel the same way.
DUST is, essentially, underwhelming. And at some points, it felt hopelessly so.
CCP Shanghai has definetly been making some small steps towards improving the game. Throughout beta I have been both their biggest supporter and their worst detractor. I merely give credit where credit is due.
Here is where I bring it all back to PVE. CCP has gained some measure of my trust back that they will not completely wreck DUST irretrievably. Honestly though, I hold no hope of really seeing a quality, solid update that doesn't need several updates to fix the mistakes it made any time soon. PVE would have to be a massive update and I feel that for the work they would put in to it we would not get as much enjoyment out of it as people are making of it.
CCP needs to focus on the things they promised would make DUST unique. Finishing the basic content of the game should be a priority. Then, they need to come up with some better game modes. Ambush can stay but honestly Skirmish 2.0 and Domination (aka Skirmish rewrap) need to be trashed. I have never seen such unimaginative cookie cutter game modes in another game.
Take lessons from MAG and BF3 and get some dynamic game modes with side objectives that require strategy. And speaking of strategy.
You have so much potential for imaginative, unique gameplay that is just completely unfufilled. I will not write lists of ideas, this is not what this thread is for.
This thread is to remind CCP that their focus should be on DIFFERENTIATING their game from the other games on the market. PVE has been done before, it is more of the same. Stretch your creativity. Make DUST 514 unique. Tap that enormous potential you guys have.
Thanks for reading, and sorry for the sort of rambling tone. |

The PvP is so intensely boring and predictable I just want a change of pace.
And to be able to control my own drones. That would be the sex.
I also don't expect drones till mid 2014, even though I don't think it should wait any longer than Christmas '13 |

And that is the problem. If shooting players (who think and present a challenge) is boring, then how fast would shooting dumb AIs get old? Very quickly, I think.
The investment of time and labor into PVE would be much better spent on making the PvP experience fun and unique. |

Meh, I think people are predictable, especially since the SP system forces people to stick with similar builds since you can't branch out much without gimping yourself (unless you've been playing for mad long). Most players are just really easy to predict. Having a lot of different strength drones with various abilities and formations and what not could present a huge challenge, with boss drones that could only be taken out with good coordination.
It would be much more exciting and would really help with industry since you could get all sorts of cool salvage from them.
Playing the same damn PvP against the same damn players with the same damn builds has gotten insanely boring.
Having the option to bounce between the two would be a god send. |

Thanks for reading, and sorry for the sort of rambling tone. It's been almost 2 years, more if you count the beta. Anyways, by 2.0, we should (we might not sadly, but we should) have all racial stuff. IF that is the case, then in 2.1, bring in Drone horde PVE, and by 2.5, I wanna see missions. By 3.0, hopefully we get manufacturing and some form of exploring and mining.. These things is where the people whom can't aim, or the non-shooters (I know people who skipped the tutorial for the sole reason of not having to shoot at ships in EVE; they went straight for mining and manufacturing) will go. |

1: Only the railgun's aim is ridiculous. All other's are ****.
2: They will probably go down the EVE route, making the special battles hard to fight, but the normal ones really easy. |

Unreal AI works differently than most AI. The way the AI works is the higher the dificulty is set the less they miss. Eventually you get to the point where they don't ever miss which you see quite often with the auto attack AI on turrets, once they lock onto you, your dead if they get a shot. |

I seem to have the opposite experience in most cases. A little side to side, even as a heavy, and I rarely die to unmanned turrets. Aside from that whole, kill your face off in an LAV instantly thing, not sure if that's still around or not. |

Well it seems the blaster turrets are set to a rather low level of dificulty, the Rail turrets on the other hand once they line up with you they can nail you from any distance (they just turn so slowly they almost never get a shot) |

I understand what you are all saying in terms of PvE potentially being more interesting than current gameplay. Believe me, I know just how boring DUST is. I think you are missing my point that if they were to spend the time they would use on PvE on working on balancing the game and adding content that makes PvP enjoyable, then it would kill two birds with one stone.
All I see happening with PvE is that they release a broken, buggy, unbalanced mode that they take a year to rework and fix... A year in which the more important PvP side of DUST could be dramatically improved.
As I see it PvE is merely a diversion to the real game of matching yourself against the rest of the players in the MMO; and when the meatiest portion of the game is lean, then how do you think the rest of the plate will be...?
Edit: What I am saying is for me, I simply will not spend time on this game even if they added the best PvE ever, because that is just not what this game was supposed to be about. Its my own personal decision, yes, but I know it is one shared by many others.
I am not saying never add PVE but just hold off until the game starts shaping up better... |

I guess the bigger question is what is DUST supposed to be? To me, I thought the lobby shooter was just one step on the way to something bigger. EVE is supposed to be the grand sandbox. Spaceships were one step on the way to the all inclusive science fiction simulator. Some players revolted when feet were introduced though and that was derailed and now it feels like everything other than PvP is being mostly ignored.
I'm hoping that DUST is going to expand to cover the science fiction simulation on the ground and be more than just hopping from one 15 minute contract to the next. PvE might start to provide that and will certainly bring in the players that have no interest being ground into hamburger by the elite players. DUST needs to appeal to a broader player base to grow. Without growth I have no idea how long CCP will continue to fund it. |
