I've been playing shooters for years, but I've never used aim assist (can't stand bots aiming for me) so I don't exactly know what it affects. I understand that it sort of acts like a low-powered magnet when your crosshairs are close to an enemy, but that's pretty much all I know about it.
Specifically, I want to know:
Does aim assist have any effect at long range?
Does aim assist have any effect on ADS view?
Does aim assist only lock when your crosshairs pass over a target, or does it just magnetize when you get close?
How easy is it to break out of an aim assisted persons crosshairs?
Is aim assist more effective or less effective at medium range than in close range?
Is there any difference between aim assist's effect on iron sights and scoped AR's?
In some other games you hear about how aim assist is what allows quick-scoping to happen (never been a quick-scoper, so I apologize if I sound ignorant of the process). Is there any effect of the new aim assist that causes this to happen with any weapon when you go from hip fire to ADS (in short, using ADS to auto lock to an enemy for a moment)?
If someone could kindly answer these questions, it would help myself and probably many other people form informed opinions about our new aim assist system and help us decide what, if any, changes need to be made to it. |

I've been testing this.
-Does aim assist have any effect at long range?
Not that I can tell. It only works with hipfire, and only with specific weapons.
-Does aim assist have any effect on ADS view?
No, ADS is not affected by aim assistance
-Does aim assist only lock when your crosshairs pass over a target, or does it just magnetize when you get close?
It's barely noticable and it doesn't track players unless you keep adjusting your aim to track players.
-How easy is it to break out of an aim assisted persons crosshairs?
how easy is it for someone to break out of your crosshairs without aim assist? It's not hard.
-Is aim assist more effective or less effective at medium range than in close range?
it's all hipfire so better in close.
-Is there any difference between aim assist's effect on iron sights and scoped AR's?
Hipfire only

aim assist isn't "sticky" so if you sucked aiming before you probably still suck with it.
as near as I can tell aim assist makes it slightly more probable that your random backscatter of shots will hit more often, but since it's hipfire only it's not quite the laser point that everyone makes it out to be. Take the whining as what it is: whining.
the culprit here is hit detection. since hit detection works, and since lag no longer plays a massive role in whether or not you get hit, it means the stuttering wobble-strafing in circles and bunny hopping are less meaningful because lag will not cause the server to lose shots the way it did before.
I played several matches with AA on, and AA off. neither had a significant variance between average kills and deaths. Except when I tried to solo the blaster madrugars in close. Now that hit detection works, I need to come up with a new game plan. I'm not desperate enough to go for the bombard from 200m up yet.
but basically it boils down to hit detection. if all of your bullets hit, instead of losing 25% of them to **** detection, you are going to sharply diminish TTK and so-called elites experience having their balls fed to them. Now we are bathing in the tears. |

I appreciate you spelling it out so thoroughly. How many weapons have you tested this out with? |

Quote:Does aim assist only lock when your crosshairs pass over a target, or does it just magnetize when you get close? In hipfire, it SOMETIMES seems to guide you towards a target you haven't lined up all the way, but usually only when said target is moving fast. When in ADS, it won't track a target that doesn't pass through your crosshairs, although I HAVE had it shift from a stationary target to one that moved behind the player I was aiming at.
Quote:How easy is it to break out of an aim assisted persons crosshairs? As easy as getting into cover if there's something nearby, otherwise it doesn't auto-turn as fast as a player can turn manually, so for people relying on it too heavily, a quick diagonal sprint at them will often throw it off.
Quote:Is aim assist more effective or less effective at medium range than in close range? MUCH better at mid-range, because the closer you are, the faster you can move in a relative sense, breaking the auto-turning speed a lot easier.

Is there any effect of the new aim assist that causes this to happen with any weapon when you go from hip fire to ADS (in short, using ADS to auto lock to an enemy for a moment)? There's a particular form of aim assist which auto-corrects your aim as you trigger ADS. This does not exist in DUST, and for that I am very thankful.
I still have some testing to do on some of these issues, it's only been a few days and I generally prefer to play with AA turned off, but thus far, that's the results I have from my own experiences with it. |

Thank you as well Garrett for your input on the matter. It's nice to get 2 well known constructive posters right off the bat, it's oh-so-rare that that happens anymore.
Feels like only yesterday I was arguing the merits of your idea of dropping into the map from orbit and my idea of AV turrets to deal with the missile menace with you Garrett. I think we've been here a little too long lol. |

Take a look at the second video to get a better understanding what aim assist is. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1268788#post1268788 |

That is a very nice explaination of what aim assist is like in other games, but I am only concerned with Dust's aim assist. I can see due to this video how aim assist differs in Dust from other games however, so +1 to you. |

The problem in Dust 514 is not the aim assist. Its hit detection or lag or both. Maybe they did something with the hitbox. But CCP will fix this. The game now is more like all ather FPS. I give a thumbs up to CCP. |
