Ok, so decided to swallow my pride and run a few matches with two AR fits. And assault-fitted scout and an assault-fitted heavy. The purpose of this was to see how it feels to be on the other side of the AR itself (deliverying instead receiving the bullets).
Now for the record I like to let everyone know that I don't have any skill points invested in light weapons with the exception of the swarm launcher. I don't even have any skill points invested into any suit beyond Minmatar Light Frame and Minmatar Scout. Therefore my fits consist only of the 'Exile' Assault with eitther the 'Skinweave' Gallente Light or 'Skinweave' Amarr Large frame. This way, only my skill and experience is involved. Needless to say, I have not used the AR since... I can't remember actually. Yeah, that long ago.
So I went into at least three skirmish matches and see the aim-assist at work. After a while I noticed that my assault rifle didn't really get pulled into the targets as I initially suspected after leaving my R stick untouched once I starting firing at a moving target. So here I will admit that I was wrong about assuming that the aim-assist was tracking the gun more than nudging it.
But there is still a problem.
Most of my shots were landing without putting much effort into the controls. It's like most of the bullets were being pulled into the target instead. Even while frantically moving, I was able to land more and more shots with very little input from the R stick. I felt that I was shooting very well despite using only an 'exile' assault rifle and having sucked badly with shooting in general within Dust. Strangely enough I play very well in games like Halo. On top of that, I wasn't even thinking much when it came to aiming.
Overall it felt like the aim-assist was just assisting too much because now I don't have to put much effort or thought at all into shooting at my target. And I have played many FPS games and I'm mostly a dedicated Halo player. Overall, CCP should at least adjust the aim-assist so that is it closse to that of Halo.
Now don't judge me here on why I say bring it down to Halo. At least in Halo, the aim-assist is very well balanced, weapons are effective within their own class without creeping into the other classesl, and hit detection is mostly spot on. In Dust, right now, the weapons are starting to become effective within their own class (with a few still needing to be addressed), and hit detection is finally on par with the rest of the FPS games. Aim-assist is somewhat a step in the right direction, but it still needs adjustment.
For instance, I want the aimm-assist to make it feel that I have to put more effort into aiming but not so much that only a player with mastery of Gun-jitsu can play decently. I want my thumbs to react more when it comes to aiming rather than just let my thumbs relax for most of the match. I didn't even feel stimulated much beyond just picking isolated targets to practice on.
At this point, it's become more of a battle of who has the better gun and better armor rather than just a battle of wits. |

Well, I'll try it without the aim-assist when I have the time. |

Maybe is a little too strong, but it help especially the new players, now if you ambush a proto bear you have a little chance to win if he's not particulary fast, i personally like that thing, most of the people i've invited to the game have left and they were saying " i shoot them a full clip and they don't die", the aim assist + better hit detection is a good thing for this game, imo. If people are good at aiming they can aim at the head to kill faster |

Well, I did some testing of the 'exile' AR without the aim-assist. As usual, I couldn't hit anyone if they went to far as to shift to the left or right. If my target was standing still, I can get him. But let's face it. Unless you're hacking an objective or calling in an orbital, you would never hold still to get shot at.
Basically I have noticed a marked difference between aim-assist on and off. My bullets hit FAR less without the aim-assist. So I decided to keep the aim-assist OFF from now on.
Now, you're probably wondering why I would do that if I suck so much. Like I said, I want a challenge. I don't want a crutch just to be successful and I would rather be killed by someone who didn't use aim-assist because at least then there was skill involved.
On the brighter side, disabling aim-assist has helped me hit my targets more effectively with the Ishukone Nova Knives. But I still have to keep hiding camping the objectives. |

You don't have to spend your skill points either.
But most people do.
You have to approach battles from the perspective that everyone who has a DS3 will have aim assist on. |

Looks like I should have done some more testing. Apparently these Russians did a much more thorough testing in a much more controlled environment. Look at the results. So I was wrong. THERE IS WEAPON TRACKING. |
