Anyone got an old MMO they'd like to share? Something that may have petered on the edge of the public eye? I'll get us started with three, my own overlooked gem and two you should already know about.
EVE Online 10 years of solid service is pretty old when most MMO can't last til the end of the quarter under the Blizzard juggernaut, but EVE found a way. This game(which I really shouldn't have to tell y'all about) is prized for it's loose moral standards. The game puts as few restrictions on you as possible, just to see what you'll do with it. We fit battleships with miners, so they made Mining Barges. We demanded freedom so we got nullsec. We demanded adventure, the Wormholes opened before us. CCP has done what most can't, and survived, if not quite thrived, for many a moon.
World of Warcraft The aforementioned Blizzard juggernaut, WoW is deserving of the definition. It is an unkillable beast, and only the largest of screwups could do it in. The game is the epitome of 'Fantasy' 'RPG' and 'class system.' Ask someone for a class and they'll probably say Paladin or Wizard. Ask about fantasy and they'll talk of elves and dwarves, instead of 'anything the mind can conjure' as the term means. The game has codified most of the Tolkien Fantasy into our collective subconsious, and at 9 years of age, is actually younger than EVE. Nice little caveat for the next time someone rails on about how WoW is the 'King of MMO' eh?
Monster Hunter Frontier (Monster Hunter Online) Never released in Engish, or ANY of the Romance Languages for that matter, Capcom's niche franchise Monster Hunter found a powerful home in the land of MMOs. With the game's Co-Op, boss mode setup it was perfectly suited to MMO levels of layers without feeling like a reskinned WoW. Due to the control scheme of the game and it's roots in Console Gaming, it easily ported to the XBox, and then to the PS3 and WiiU. The game is a wonderful romp in a world of steampunk tech and awe inspiring monstrosities of nature, and although the language barrier is irritating, it is entirely surmountable to fans of the localized console editions. Barely two and a half years WoW's junior, it has earned its place in the pantheon of successful MMOs. Where else could you fight THIS?

/thread You may want to tell the class abit more about Ashen empires than its beta name :p This isn't a contest for the oldest MMO, just a place to share. |

Final Fantasy XI is still alive and kicking despite alienating their player base with the Pandemonium Warden, Absolute Virtue, and Salvage incidents. Hell, they sent the guy in charge of development to work on XIV when it flopped. |

The Realm Online is the current oldest still running MMO if my Google powers are not lying to me. It was released in 1996 and is still running with a small population of 100 - 200 people at peak hours. It has a 7 day free trial after which period it costs $6.99 a month.

GW2 even tried to while attempting to cut out the middle man by running their own RMT market and paid for it in the end. |

Wait what about Ultima Online? Personally I haven't played it but I remember people bashing this over other people's heads whenever the "oldest" MMO was mentioned. |

Neocron.
Cyberpunk 1st/3rd person mmo. PvP, weapon customisation, player housing, persistent world, consequences of action, vehicles, high immersion and free to play at the moment.
Downsides, dated graphics and lowish population |

I can't believe the OP missed Ever Quest, the original has been running since 1999.
Yes Ultima may be older than EQ, but EQ has been the basis for 99% of the current MMOs. |

Anarchy Online is still running. Used to play that back in 2001 and then again in 2004 when they made the classic content (without expansions) F2P. |

Ultima Online is still running strong. There are even some free servers out there if you want to bypass paying money for it. It has alot of features that alot of MMO's still cant do. And i think it was the first true sandbox. custom Player housing, real estate, killing people and taking there stuff. lots of good things. crafting ubur armor takes years to develop the skills, as well as spreadsheets, heavy math and alot of time and luck. I was quite surprised to see UO still healthy after 15 or so years. |
