Speaking as someone who actually likes this game and wants it to succeed, I have a few comments about Uprising 1.4, specifically directed towards Scouts (primarily of the Shotty Variety, but also ninjas) as well as Dropship pilots. It is no secret that we are the two most neglected sub-communities in the larger context of Dust and New Eden. This goes without saying (I refuse to take heavies and tankers seriously - especially tankers. Honestly. If going 23-1 is not enough for you then just keep it to yourself). 1.4 seems to have dealt both of us a vicious blow - a blow that seems difficult to recover from. ( I will address DS pilots at the end)
As a gallente scout, my advanced suit has 87 shield and 167 armor. That is all. Mass Drivers, even basic mass drivers, kill me in one-hit. No exceptions. It a rare occasion that I survive any damage coming from any explosive weapon. Assault rifles can shoot at me from half-way across a map - stop me in my tracks (because for some reason any time I take damage I slow down and become a sitting duck. Yesterday for instance, I was running towards an objective, behind a building hoping to sneak in unnoticed. Unfortunately I was spotted from a very long distance away and shot at by an AR. I managed to sneak back behind the building to lay a trap for that guy, because I felt like he was the type to pursue when he smelled blood in the water. I ran to the side of the building, dropped a drop uplink just in case, then lied in wait for the suit to come. BOOM. After a short encounter, I came out on top - he was an Amarr Medium. Popped him. My extra mobility and stamina (1 complex cardiac regulator and 1 complex kinetic catalyzer ensure that I can move at something resembling high speed for a LONG time) proved to be the deciding factor as I wiggled in and out of trouble, ultimately striking him with my shotgun and finishing him off with my smg - both basic weapons of course, because I'm a scout and do NOT have the luxury of CPU/PG. This encounter made me feel great. Even better was what came next. In my 2 high slots I have one Complex Light Damage Modifier (a controversial, but well reasoned method to compensate for not being able to use prototype weaponry). In my second is a basic Precision enhancer. I'm a scout and long ago gave up the idea of being able to fight on even footing with other suits. So I've been focusing on my precision, dampening and range amplification skills. My Scanning range is pretty awesome and having no PG left after fully fitting my suit I decided to use this Precision enhancer - it has come in handy. It is a rare occasion that anyone sneaks up on my these days and so it was yesterday. A minnie scout from the opposing team headed to the site of my just-finished battle and I saw him on my radar (never physically saw him). I went around the corner - i sat in wait and then - HEADSHOT. The moment he rounded the corner I popped him so hard it wasn't even funny (well actually it was hilarious).
These things made me feel good about this game. This sequence was everything that was RIGHT about the scout suit. I stopped using shield extenders because with my low slot count, I would only be able to fit one and even 66 additional shields would only mean an additional one or two shots from an AR to kill me. With the incredible rate of fire of that weapon, coupled with the duration that it can fire without reloading, I gave up on trying to survive encounters with an AR, especially with a shotgun. This has worked very well. It's what came next that brought me back down to earth.
Having dispatched of the enemy, I again moved towards the objective. I had regenerated my 87 shields and was left with 20 armor. I turned the corner of the building again and the EXACT same scenario played itself out again. I was spotted by a medium with an AR from halfway across the map. I was hit. I slowed down. The game chugged for a second. Instead of escaping with shields and half armor depleted, this time I was shot down and killed all before ever reaching the objective that was my primary purpose in taking that route in the first place. |

If you would excuse my indulgence in literary prose, you'd see that I tell this story to illustrate that all it takes to eliminate a scout suit is bad luck - the decision to take that route was well informed from a survey of the terrain as well as observations from previous months of playing Dust. This story reflects the inherent flaws in the Scout's role and its execution. Even a well trained scout, who sets traps, engages sparingly and plays his role will be swatted like a fly if he/she have one misstep. I give up any form of protection and for what? Speed? Yesterday, with my beloved precision enhancer, I caught a minnie assault suit unaware and ran after him as he sprinted. And I ran. And I ran and I ran, for something approaching 50 seconds. I had barely made a dent in the distance between us before he checked his 6, and squashed me, turning the hunter in the the hunted. I know these are well trodden arguments and debates but it has to be said once more - there is nothing - NOTlHING - advantageous about being in the scout role. I only do it because it's what I started as and have SP invested in, and also because of my affection for the gallente scout suit's design. Speed, stamina and quick shield regeneration can all be matched in other suits - and that's before considering their use of expanded high slots for damage mods and added protection.
1.4 has only made the situation worse so far. My shotgun is nigh useless - I just stalked a minnie medium who was hacking our objective. Took a second to aim perfectly, shot him in the head - got the hit markers and did 0 damage O___O. I just had a match that was 15 on 6 (naturally I was one of the six). O_________________O. I think people are overreacting to aim assist (which I think works fine for automatic weapons from my tests - not overpowered, just leveling the playing field) - the only problem is that with my paltry health I canGÇÖt afford to be hit an extra one or two times in an engagement because it only likes 4 or 5 hits (and thatGÇÖs being generous) to finish me off. I know CCP is promising to do something for scouts SOONGäó but IGÇÖm skeptical that the fix will go far enough (if a dev could chime in on this point, that would be great) considering the history of this play style. I mean for goodness sakes, whose Idea was it to give the caldari logi proto almost DOUBLE the slots of a proto scout??? In addition to ample room for equipment and prototype weaponry? I mean, I donGÇÖt think its outrageous for a prototype scout (especially gallente) to expect to have at least as much health (with the aid of a module or two) as a militia caldari medium suit while still maintaining high speed (and I use the term GÇ£highGÇ¥ here very loosely) and possibly even the ability to scan your surrounding.
Lastly, the reason I bring DS pilots in on this is because I really really feel your pain. In the time between the full reset and the optional respect back in May I moonlighted as an AV player with proto swarms and AV grenades and the like and I know from experience how easy it is to destroy dropships. Tanks require teamwork if they are fitted well and LLAVs are invincible. Period. Being at the bottom of the vehicle pile but still not having your voices heard is something I can relate to. All this being said, CCP, what say you? Forgive me if this thread came up as whining GÇô itGÇÖs more frustration than anything. And please, for the love of pete, no responses below of someone stroking their own ego (e.g. GÇ£I regularly go 24-0 with scout suits while sitting on the toilet reading a newspaper. GG scrubGÇ¥)

TL;DR
CCP, you need to repay the loyalty of scouts and ds pilots SOME way and SoonTM won't cut it anymore. |
