Real cloaking/invisibility that does not generate a lot of heat or one direction is done by using material which bends electromagnetic waves, in this case visible light around the user. When light bends around the user it also means nothing is entering the users eye either, meaning the user is effectively blind.
Of course the user would have another form of vision while they are cloaked and this is where X-Ray Vision would come in. Being higher frequency and shorter ++, means that this vision would be short range due to scattering.
I was thinking something like this vision wise Something along the lines of this
This would prevent cloak sniping from being as effective and the blur would limit movement with the cloak, especially if you can't see where everything is until you within 30 m of it.
I've also thought that maybe it should take a high slot and a module to run a cloak, with scouts being able to skip out on the slot requirement.
Any thoughts on this? |

Any ideas involving Cloaks have my +1.
BUT i would prefer something like cloak being SCOUT only. OR there is a slight chance, were you will get in a game and the whole enemy team is using cloaking devices.... |

I favor scout only as well, but I wasn't sure how the Medium Frame crowd was going to respond to that, if it would be for everyone I think this and maybe better x-ray vision distance for scout for a good trade off.

It will probably be an equipment. I want to see (not see) invisible Minny hacking logis, but I think scouts should get a fitting reduction, Maybe 70% pg and CPU usage. |

Omg...I have the image of an entire squad lying in wait for an ambush. Love it. ooooooooooh how about a piece of equipment that you cant use while you're moving, but will create a 2-3 meter bubble of invisibility even to higher frequencies? Could hide your whole team in a spot and them pop out. |

cpu reduction is pointless considering that scouts have small cpu/pg pools (a scout cpu/pg reduction would equal a logi with high cpu/pg, essentially no bonus), it would essentially be zero benefits to scouts, tis better to make the equipment suck for the other suits performance wise than to give the scout the cpu/pg boost, and this is even considering if we are giving the other suits cloaking at all. |

For x-ray vision to work you need an x-ray emitter on the other side of what your are looking at. Since Dust maps aren't littered with 1000's of x-ray emitters I say we go with thermal vision instead. |

Thermal vision would most likely be based on infrared which is close enough to visible light to be concealed too, good thinking though. still with the amount of power these things consume there HAS to be some form of radiation given off lol. |

The cloaking would be cool but I think it should be like the one from Team Fortress 2, having it timed and having it recharge like the active scanner. |

The emitter or source of the energy would be the person who is cloaked who emits these x-rays which get absorbed by the environment distinction comes by the different abortion rates. It is the reason why bones are highlighted more in x-ray pictures because they absorb more of the energy. It would function similarly to echolocation.
Also I don't know how heat mechanics works with our dropsuits and shields, but the problem with infrared vision is that it takes away the general weakness I was trying to implement by giving short range vision to the cloaked unit, infrared has longer wavelengths and scatters even less than the visible range.
The x-ray emitting aspect could also be used as a tool to explain why a cloaked unit may have his profile sig raised as another form of balance. |

I dont think Others besides SCOUTS should be able to use this ''cloaking'' equipment. Here is why:
1st- im biased as i play scout 2nd-Logis, having 3-4 equipment slots can abuse this WAY too much. They can equip the cloaking device, then invisibly repair friendlies, lay Remote explosives, drop uplinks, etc... Assault and Logis ALREADY have lots of advantages and another one is not needed. Logis ARE supposed to be visible, thats why they are yellow. 3rd-I would however , consider COMMANDOS for the ability to use these cloaking devices, since they suck so bad. 4th - im actually out of ideas right now but will edit soon.
I think only scouts deserve Cloaking devices. Of COURSE, later on we could include Suit specific equipment for all types.Say, Shield and armor plates modules (since they dont have equipment slot) that give damage resistance for heavies or An equipment that when activated , Passively repairs blue dots in the vicinity equal to the Logis passive Repair rate per second, so on.... |

In Eve you can cloak a Battleship so I do not see why we could not cloak a suit in Dust.
Keep the rules similar to EVE.
1) You can not engage in combat while cloaked 2) Your speed is greatly reduced while cloaked 3) To attack you must uncloak, wait a couple seconds then when the suit is "Recalibrated" you can attack again. |

thermal could be used simply as a way to see enemies from far away, or ones that are hard to see. Maybe a Geiger counter could take up a high slot and make a clicking sound whenever an enemy is near. |

Anybody ever play the Aliens vs. Predator series on PC years ago? I think it was number 2 that we used to play, it was an older game even in 2004.
Predator cloaking in that game was phenomenal. If you were still, you were very difficult to see but not impossible. Any movement or weapons fire would make you more visible for a split second too. That's how cloaking needs to work, but we need to have ways to detect it too. A special cloak detecting active scanner would be cool, or a module that you could fit that would allow you to see cloaked mercy but that was difficult to fit even for a logi suit.
Also borrowing from AVP, a fun device tk have would be a motion detector. You remember those hand held devices from aliens that "pulsed" and showed moving objects? Something like a poor man's active scanner that wouldn't give you IFF information but would tell you if there is anything moving nearby whether you can see it or not. |
